Float heights

    Ok ok..I know this is a 4 stroke forum :p. But I thought id post my problem here...as I cant seem to get a decent response from the RGV site.

    THe problem Im having is that whenever I start the bike...it runs perfect for about 10 minutes..then just dies....and I think it may be flooding.

    Anyone got any clues why this is happening? I just adjusted the float heights on the weekend..so I cant see how that would be the case.

    You've already done all the basic troubleshooting? Tank vent, fuel filter, fuel, fuel tap, fuel pump, reserve switch... I don't know what all of these the RGV has.

    I'm thinking that it is fuel related, but could be a spark issue. Maybe a coil is heating up, CDI going bad, loose battery connection, and the list goes on. lol

    Yeah..ive pretty much 95% nailed it down to fuel. Its definetly getting spark..checked that on each cylinder. There is no fuel filter, (and that bike runs for 10 mins no worries so that dont make much sense).

    Its definetly getting fuel..coz its running no problems straight off.

    Lol, I know its gonna be such a small problem when I find out..I was running fine today..took it round the block..the thing was flying..then took it back in..few more tests thinking maybe everything was ok...then it flooded again.     Your problem may be starving not flooding. Have you checked that the tank tap , filter and fuel line are clear.
    If there is some restriction you may get partial supply until it eventually runs the carbs out and stops.

    Ok...pretty sure ive found the problem...I dropped the needles 1 circlip so that it would run leaner at lower rpm...this must be starving the engine of fuel...and therefore it runs out.

    In which notch does the disc now sit in on the needle?

    All mine sit in the middle ring.

    Standard position is circlip on centre notch. ie where they are. Most manufacturer usually send their bikes out the door with non adjustable needles so that the emissions can remain fairly constant. Thats why DynoJet etc make loads of money selling replacement adjustable needles and jets. As stated above, dropping will richen the mixture low to mid range and raising will lean. From my experience with your bike, raising way be worth trying. Depends how it is perfoming with the "new" carbs. BTW did you get the carbs balanced this morning?
