I hadn't started googling rewind services yet, and now that I have I may well do the rewind myself as I've got the vacuum equipment to do the epoxy impregnation as the final step.

First I'm going to do the unloaded voltage test followed by the loaded current test.

I'll do a write-up of both of those for others reference.

There's a new FZR400 stator out of the US on evilbay for $70 US which with shipping may be the better option if I have difficulty sourcing the wire I need.
Not sure if it fits though...

Well I think rewinding it yourself is a good option. Sounds like you know what you are doing Glenn, go for it.
    cheers

Guys I am getting really fit with all my jumping to conclusions, great exercise routine I've got going...;)

Thanks for all chiming to help I really appreciate it - it's a great forum

Anyway it was a poor connection in the loom between the stator output plug and the short length of wire that then plugs into the regulator.

Why it's there in the first place is a little beyond me, as it's just another potential point of failure.

And the masochist in me was looking forward to the adventure of rewinding it...
