Yeh the 280XXX number indictates it is a 3LN3 but depending on what the compliance plate says it will either be a 90 or 91 I reckon. Mine's a 1991, but yours is a much lower number as mine is 282XXX.

Colour scheme is rad though... here's mine, currently getting an engine rebuild in amongst a lot of other fizzer work lol...

    20150314_115250.jpg

It looks to me like someone may have done something with the authorities to try and issue it an unorthodox engine number. A lot of these old bikes simply have "1HX" as an engine number (my Phaser does as well) so it may have been changed to satisfy some anal person who wanted to identify it by that rather than the VIN as it should.

Interesting about the engine number... I know on "Import Monster" you can't import a Motor cycle engine into Australia unless it has a "full" engine number. But most of the ones I have looked at from around the late 80's early 90's only have the prefix... at least for Jap engines.. makes bikes with Matching numbers more desirable...

Nice Fizzer... love that colour scheme..

If you look at the number of 3LN3's that were built there were 45,899 built between February 1990 and the end of April 1991
So if you average that out over the 14 month's, that make's it 3278 were built each month
The first engine number is 1HX-279101 so in the first month they built 3278 bike's, the last engine number would be
    1HX- 282380
Also the frame number is different to the engine number, the Frame number for a 3LN3 FZR250 start's with 3LN- ****** whereas the engine number will be 1HX- ******
I'm also pretty sure the bike had to come into Australia with all the relevant detail's from Japan, eg frame number, engine number, first registration date etc etc

My FZR has an engine number in the 283*** region so i'm pretty sure it was made in March 1990,
then depending on new bike sale's and Yamaha's stock rotation it may not have been first registered until some time in 1991
My FZR is registered as a 1991 model as well.

These day's manufacturer's use the term MY** in front of the model.
"MY stands for Model Year and refers to the model cycle that the car is in, NOT essentially the year it was built.
It is perfectly normal and acceptable to have a car that was built in 2012 but is labelled MY13 due to an update or revision of the model since the MY12 edition."

the XXX'd out number could well nave been 1HX and the stamped engine number might be the number associated with the Grey Import approval... if there is one.
As long as there are previous Rego papers and or there is a VIN it should all be fine...

That crankcase has a non-Yamaha number stamped onto it. The X'd out is likely IHX. Logic would dictate that the bike required new crankcases at some point in its life. I had an engine like this. It only had IHX stamped behind the clutch.

Facing the front of the bike, on the left hand side around the exhaust header and above the sump there may be an engine number stamped.

That frame has had 6U900000 stamped in front of the original frame number. On all FZR's I've seen in person, they usually have a line through them and an import compliance plate around the head stem area.

Your bike may have been stolen in the past (even if not reported stolen), stripped of its compliance plate and gone through police/transport authority identification. I had to go through that with a Zeal I had. It was done via an AUVIS inspection centre and a blueslip. If your bike has no compliance plate on it, that may be why. Sometimes the rivets fail and it can fall off. If the bike loses registration then it's more or less the same process.

This is what the form looked like for NSW

    Hi Guys
Been without internet access all day.

First up thanks to all contributing to dechipher these strange numbers, The bike is unlicensed, The last time it was licensed was 2006 I have spoken with the WA Dept Transport and they have issued me with a "release of information certificate " which is basically a copy of the license documents from 2006

The previous owner who went to Norway with work and has been there since 2008 got married etc had a friend put it in storage.
He returned to Perth for Christmas, Got the bike out of storage advertised it on Gumtree I got it for, Wait for it ......... $400 bucks

I've had a few bikes in my day so i can tell a thrashed dodgy bike, This thing is completely original, The fellow i got it off is respectable assures me and he will forward the original bill of sale owners manual etc. This was his his first bike and you can tell he was attached to it, Due to my young fellow (12 going on 22) being with me and his enthusiasm for it and the promise to stay in touch etc he let it go for peanuts.

The bike has never been stolen and recovered Engine has never been split

I'll know more later, after i come back from the 8yo bmx Practice i'll start stripping the rest of the plastics and prep for its first taste of fuel since 08
Thanks Again Guys Really Appreciate it
    Regards
    Mark
Ps a link for service manual would be helpful and appreciated

WA law's may be different regarding grey import's, but there still should be an extra plate riveted to the frame somewhere up to say it's been modified to comply with the Australian Standard's
Is there still a plate on your bike like this one ?
I've never seen one that use's the Japanese frame number as part of the vin, it is normally a complete new vin stamped into the headstem with the original number's having a line stamped through them

The engine may be a replacement engine ex Japan, and the importer stamped a new engine number into it ?
Your engine number should be 280357 same as your frame if it is still the original engine,
but on the engine that is currently fitted you can see the engine number prefix 1HX and that it has been stamped over with X's, and the number's after it shouldn't have any letter's at either end, should just have 6 number's

    image.jpg image.jpg image.jpg Late Night-but peace & quiet to do more investigations

Fairings off, Absolutly no compliance plate as per my67xr image above, I checked the frame for any signs of rivet holes that may have filled in, Nope nothing suspicious, looks factory, in a past life i was sheetmetal worker so fairly confident.
    I have discoverd the following.

Private Import perhaps rather than a normal "Grey Import"?

Maybe pull the fuel bowl's off while the tank etc is off, check for any dirt/gum etc in the bottom, then go from there.
And check the spark plug's look clean too.
Check for any sign's of rust in the tank, clean the pickup filter's if they need it, put some fresh fuel in, turn ignition on and listen for the fuel pump to prime, check there's no fuel coming out the overflow's and if not try starting it (full choke)

Have you had a look at some of our build thread's yet ?
