We have taken the tappet covers off and checked the timing marks on the can sprockets and it looks like the front ones are lining up as they should but the back ones are not also the rear cam chain tensioner looks very different to the the front one could the rear cam chain have slipped ? Im not sure really about them being warn I have not seen any warn to new to compare them but they have good teeth.. With the timing mark on the crack sharft lined up on the t2 mark. The marks on the cam shaft sprockets don't line up the manual says it should .. should I line them up like the manual says and try and start it ?
If that is what the manual tells you to do. Just turn it over with the starter (kill switch off) and recheck the marks before starting after changing the settings.

We have taken the cam chain tensioners out and they seem fine, now we have gone to put the cams back in and time it the way the manual says and it doesn't work.. seems like a piston is hitting on a valve .. I have had three goes and just can not seem to get it.. is there another manual for this or can someone please tell me how to do it step by step ? cheers
From memory you set the timing from the rear piston, well you do on a vtr250 Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Yep tried that also nothing is working..is there any where on here or anyone on here that can give me step by step info on setting the timing I have tried so many different ways from internet advise and the manual which is confusing as ..
Just updating you all on the progress of the Honda spada.. we managed to get hold of another manual and got the timing done . we also took the tensioner arm out of the back and check that it is working ok and it seems to be fine working as the manual states we also thought that the cam chain may be the problem because the rattle is still present and it is coming from the back so we brought a new cam chain and put it in and the rattle is still there !!we have replaced the oil and oil filter we have also replaced the spark plugs and air filter.. with most of our $$ gone we are at a complete loss we may have to cut our losses and try taking it to a mechanic .. any one with any other suggestions ? the rattle is definitely coming from the back cam chain area .. getting frustrated and depressed at the old spada
Im certainly no expert on engine internals but to me that video of the noise sounds like something knocking as opposed to 'rattling' Can some more of u old engine experts have a listen and throw in your opinions.

Hi Guys, I bought a little red Spada last year (for my girlfriend to do her learners on but I kept it for myself ha) with a helicopter cam chain noise and have been reading up on it for about a year. My bike had rust in the tank when I got it so I have to clean the carbies out as well. Back to the Spada cam tensioners NOISE. The research I have done includes taking the bike to an old mechanic at a shop and showing him. He didn't want a bar of it and said just put up with it because they are too hard to work on therefore too expensive for the price I paid to warrant getting him doing the work. Second I found a similar problem occurs with the VT250 engine and there is a link of how you can modify the tensioner so as it works and stops the noise. HOWEVER this is a different tensioner to the Spada so don't bother unless you can work out how they did it and apply the same technique to a different tensioner. I wouldn't recommend it unless you are an engineer. It seems to have been written by a mongolian caveman complete with pencil scratches for diagrams. But if anyone needs it I can prob help there. Love the 1930's type writer font too): http://www.motorcyclephilippines.com/forums/showthread.php?138248-Honda-Spada-Corner-(Book-3)/page7 I read a forum post from a guy who had some success. he said he pulls out the tensioners which have a ucket type reservoir which fills up with oil and over time it becomes contaminated metal filing filled sludge. this he claims is what stops the tensioner working properly. So he clams to have soaked it in kerosene for 2 days and somehow cleaned out the sludge, maybe by swishing it around or using a compressed air gun. Didn't specify. Anyway after he put everything back together he said his helicopter sounded like a sewing machine and was pleased as punch with himself. I will try and find the link. When I do I'll let you know how it goes. As they only made the Spada for one year I doubt the tensioners are different on Australian delivered compared to 'grey' imports. There is a rumour that some grey's are restricted. Mine has a light that comes on when you hit 80kph but it doesn't seem to be limited in any other way, ha. WARNING. After reading this forum and another regarding pulling out cam tensioners and replacing them the bike sounds like tappets are hitting or some part of the tensioner has broken off and gotten jammed inside. So follow the manual. Get the timing marks right. I will try and find the link to that blog where an online mechanic helped a guy with this but he never got back to the mechanic to tell him if it worked. I am currently doing up a Kawasaki Z200 1980. In the past I have owned: 3 x Honda CB 550 f Supersport 1975-6, Yamaha SR 500 1978, Honda Cb1100f Super Bol Dor 1981, Honda Cbr 600RR 2003. I am 72kg not very tall therefore like the single and twins. Easy to work on and retro cool. However I like the Spada for its build quality and horsepower. Great tyres and brakes. Although I did come off trying not to hit a Chinese kamikaze pedestrian and dented the tank, bent the gear lever and the snapped the clutch lever housing. I beeped her twice and she basically bee lined straight for me so I had to lay her down. Slid for about 6m then just tapped her ankle when I came to a stop. The moron just got up and ran away. Wrecked my good jacket too and I still have the scar on my hip. Boo hoo. Anyway, its a great around towner (as long as you don't go near Chinatown). SO was the modified CD 250 U with its skinny flat back tyre. Lots of fun but not very fast. My mate still owns it but its rusting away in the Bondi air. I would like to have a ride on the big brother BROS NT 400-650 as well with the single rear arm. Another bike I would like to stumble across cheap is the Yamaha SRV 600 single. It's about the same size as the Spada. The SRV250 isn't too bad looking either but looks a bit 'nanna' compared to the others.
