Just wanted to say hello and thanks for all the great info on this forum! I have had this 1965 Yamaha YDS3C for the past 27 years and have not done a thing to it. I had it running once when my father-in-law first gave it to me in 1987. I have dragged this thing around the world with me during my many career related moves. Well, last month my wife informed me that if I didn't do something with that damn Yamaha, she was going to roll it out to the curb next trash day. I took that as permission to spend some money to get the parts I know I'm going to need to get this thing not only roadworthy, but looking good as well ! I am not going for a factory perfect restoration, rather a motor rework, some new color on the tins, new rubber and a whole bunch of chrome headed bolts and screws. All of the pieces are here and thankfully most are serviceable. It had spent its previous life in New Mexico so there is not much rust on it. I will occasionally post pics of my progress as well as asking questions and advice. I have two other bikes. My daily rider is a 2014 Harley Davidson Road King and the other (needs restored) is a 1978 Harley FXS Low Rider. The Yamaha was begging for a makeover so I chose it over the HD FXS to start with. Thanks to all of you for making this such a great resource! Regards~ Scott My 2014 Road King My 1965 YDS3C. I will post pics before the tank and side panels were removed. What I hope to emulate with mine. 1978 HD FXS (this one is not mine, but a pic from the inter webs) Mine is buried in the barn.
Thanks for stopping by, enjoy your stay. We do love pictures on this forum - good to see you started with a few! I'll be keen to see how the restoration goes.
welcome Scott, I do like the look of the scrambler pipes This guy might a good resource for you : http://www.ydsparts.com/ Cheers Chris
Thank you for the warm welcome, Fred, Kiffsta and Huntsman! I will try to keep current on the progress pics. Kiffsta- thanks for the link for parts. There seems to be a decent supply of new and used parts available. I've been researching parts and repairs for some time. One item in particular I cannot locate are the clutch friction discs. There are plenty of the steel clutch discs around but not so the friction discs. Any leads? Again, gentlemen, thank you for recognizing me. I will start a thread on the restoration process in the appropriate section of the 250cc forum. Regards~ Scott
to the community Heres a bit of a lead on the friction plates .... I would assume they would be the same in the models of those years? http://www.ebay.com/itm/YAMAHA-NOS-CLUTCH-DISC-SET-R3-5-DTs-RTs-MXs-168-16321-10-/350978672825 http://www.partzilla.com/parts/detail/yamaha/YP-168-16321-10-00.html http://www.partspak.com/ProductCart...late-Friction-New-5Y1-16331-01-00-p206795.htm http://2fiftycc.com/index.php?resources/categories/yds3.39/
Hello Scott and welcome. I have recently finished the restoration of a YDS-5 (the next model, see my build thread) and found a lot of NOS in the US. The most helpful people were Speed and Sport in Bloomsburg, Pensylvania. They have been Yamaha dealers since 1965 and knew their stuff and were really helpful when the wrong bits turned up. www.yamahanosparts.com Look forward to seeing your bike progress.
@ Moo and McLaren, thank you! @ GreyImport, thank you for the links. I will check them out and let you know how I fare. @ Murdo, first I've heard of Speed & Sport and on initial look it appears they have a lot to offer. I'm thinking I will need to get the friction plate part number out of my parts manual and try to cross reference to different year/model. Spent most of today soda-blasting the gas tank and side covers down to the metal and hopefully get a coat of primer on them. I will post a few pics for TechHeadFred!
Thanks, Risky. I will wait until I'm finished with the resto and then decide if I want to sell. Are you looking for a project YDS3 or one that's restored? They pop up on Craigslist every so often. I'd be happy to help you find one. Lemme know!
