Does anyone know if a 150 rear tyre can be fitted onto the original wheen with room in the arm and chain? Cheers in advance.
If this is a track bike then I suggest you do ten laps and record your best time then change to the larger tyre and repeat. Big tyres are like big jets, they make you go slower. They weigh more, slow down the steering and are a waste of money. Flame away all you big tyre fans cheers
you would may get away with a 150 rear but Maelstrom is right. the ninja takes a 140 standard....I've changed the tyre for something more suitable to race but I've stayed with the 140. some have even dropped to a 120 to allow quicker turn in. whats your reasoning behind wanting to go up if you don't mind me asking?
Thanks for the replies guys. The only reason that I wanted to try a 150 is to open my options up. The 140 standard rear is hard to get hold of and a 150 has far more options rather than trying to gain more grip for myself. I've managed to secure tyres now but they are getting harder to get these days. My tyres are: 140 60 18 rear 110 70 17 front Finding a matching pair is a nightmare so have taken advice from a specialist supplier and they are supplying me with Bridgestone BT090 and BT092's.
Maybe you can get a 17" rear wheel from another model. Usually it is the 18" wheel that presents a problem.
Yeah man, I had a VFR400 NC30 with the same issues as its a 18" standard rear too, we used to swap them out with the RVF400 as that's a 17" standard. So the question is. Do I stay original or go 17's? So the other question is. What fits the GJ73A that's 17"?
Yes a Dunlop Alpha 13 150/60 will fit, but I use the 140 for the reasons mentioned above. If you want to go to a 17" an Across wheel can be made to fit fairly easily, I have one so I can use racing wets which aren't available in an 18". The axle diameter is smaller so you will need larger ID bearings (easy to get and cheap), plus the two inner spacers from the standard 18" wheel. I had to remove about 2mm from the center wheel spacer, even better get one made out of ally to save weight. You will also need the standard brake disc. I imagine an RGV VJ22 wheel would fit fairly easily and be lighter and wider than standard, but then you might run into issues with tyre rubbing the chain. Obviously the smaller diameter of the 17" will lower the ride height in the back, so you will probably need some customer linkage rods (dog bones), @maelstrom could make some for you.
if the 17" from an across is a relativity easy fit i'd swap it out just to open up the availability of Tyre choice. i sold a set of fzr wheels to a mate with an rgv with the same issue. @Boydie77 what wets are you running? size ect?
The Across wheel should be cheap and plentiful the only real problem is, it's heavy! I haven't weighed it but it felt noticeably heavier compared to the stock rim in my hand. Sprocket choice is a bit more limited too, it's the same hub as a GS500 but the stock hub is the same as RGV which gives more choice of sizes especially in alloy sprockets. These aren't really issues on a road bike though I guess. I have Bridgestone wets, a 155/620R17 ME77 plus a matching 110/590R17 ME01Z for the front. Not too fussed about loosing ride height as I can wind up the ride height adjuster on the shock and having the steering geometry a little flatter probably won't matter too much on an easy-steering 250. Haven't mounted them yet but they should be great, I've raced in the wet 4 times on my 600 and although I wasn't the fastest guy out there I really enjoyed it.
Great info guys. The 17" rear will be the way forward once I find an Across as we dont have them in the UK either, unless its marked up as something else. Getting bearings and machining parts is no issue for me so this is a good start.
Oh whoops I didn't realise you were in the UK. I would make an educated guess that the Bandit 250 wheel is similar if not the same and the GS500 would be a good contender too... Good luck!
