i may have a slight problem with my fzr 250, i had slightly overfilled the oil last week and had ridden the bike a couple times clocking up about 150k, and today i thought i'd drain some out of the sump, ok so far but then i heard something drop into the pan that i was using to collect the oil, sump plug back in, dip into the oil and pulled out 2 ball bearings, panic starts to set in drained some more and another 3 bearings drop out, What have i done, what has got ball bearings in maybe about 2mm in size no more, last thing i want to do is strip the motor down (already have a 750xv in pieces)

The only place ball bearings are used is in the gearbox to support the gear shafts. Engine oil is shared with the gearbox. Sounds like one bearing has collapsed.
Not sure how big a job it is to get the box apart. I have only pulled 2 strokes apart and you have to completely dismantle the engine. Hopefully it is not so difficult with the FZR.

well the last thing i was wanting was to strip the motor down, that means trying to find gaskets and bearings and i think there are 4 of in the gearbox 2 are nsk bearings they might be easier to get, bugger, and i've only had the bike registered a week ago,. Can anyone tell me if the motor has to be completely stripped down?

Two crankcase bolts are under the cylinders. This means the head and cylinders have to come off to separate the case halves.

Basically, you're pulling the engine and stripping it right down ...

I am somewhat concerned about where those bearings would have come from. They seem awfully small if they are 2mm diameter. I would almost think they are too small for a gearbox shaft bearing.. I would expect something more around 4-5mm

Perhaps someone else on the site may know.

Does the gearbox sound ok when riding?

The water pump uses a B6000 bearing, with 3/16" / 4.8mm balls. The can be pulled off from the outside, so you might want to check it before tearing down completely.

The transmission bearings are 2x 6202, 1x 6205, and a Koyo 83B139SH2C3, which may be custom to Yamaha - probably easier to get it through a dealer, 93306-20217.

thanks don will have a look at that as soon as it stops raining, as for the gearbox bearings tried yamaha didn't have any in stock which is not unusual anyway got quoted $30 each for 93306-20218 so i went to a bearing shop seeing these are nsk and brought two for $6 each not a bad mark up for yamaha, anyway haven't pulled the motor out yet so will check water pump first,. I can see also i am going to have fun rebuilding my xv750 with the availability of parts from yamaha' lol, thanx

well I managed to go and check the water pump bearings, all intact and no way they could find their way into the crankcase so it's back to the gearbox

You forgot to mention the magneto has to come off as well there is a bolt (3 actually) that holds the rear cover on to case halves so i need to buy special tool to remove magneto, not looking forward to it and really didn't expect to lets say recon engine (rings bearings, may as well do the cam chain, gasket kit and then there is the head, valves and shims) that money i want to spend on my 750 virago. So at the moment that project is sitting, luckily i had another 250 that i could use that motor allbeit with a few carby problems which hopefully i have sorted out

"Nothing is easier to get thru yamaha dealer here", i still need part number for 6205, hopefully someone here can look up Koyo list and find that bearing or alternative part number
I needed to get piston rings for my virago, Japan didn't even have any so i managed to get a couple sets from the Bike bandit rather expensive by the time they got here, Rings and head gaskets $127US plus tax and freight and bank charges total cost $282 AUD

*WOW* Too late now, but next time try http://www.redline-ci.com/ - they've gotten me parts from Japan for quite civilised prices. (BANK charges? Try Paypal or a credit card next time)

6205 is a universal size description - any bearing shop or online store can sell it to you.
