Ok so during my little "no starting" adventure by bad luck (or so i thought) I purchased new plugs just in case it was the problem. NKG Iridium IX ch9erix9 or whatever it is. Now I have read a fair bit about it and was definitely convinced that standard plugs for the bike would out perform the iridium plugs. Here is what I have noticed with the IX IMO and believe me when I say I had a strong bias in favor of standard plugs. 1. when i went to start my engine when it was cold this morning it was A LOT quicker and easier than normal, pretty much just instantly on with 0 trouble. 2. consistency smoother and more consistent rev range, no doubt about it. 3. call me crazy but i swear it has had a decent a boost in power. It could just be because I have chopped the leads and cleaned all the connections in the ignition system but I have more power than what i did before. Also I will note that I have NO idea how old the previous spark plugs where.
While I dont profess to know the underlying techncial differences between standard and iridium plugs except fo the fact they are supposed to last alot longer. I did buy irdiums for a bike once because I thought they cost more, there fore must be better, for the record I didnt see any difference. My mechanic always says if they shipped with iridiums then use them, but if they shipped with regulars then use regular plugs.
yeah totally inconclusive data, if they are better happy accident but I can say for sure its not worse *nods*.
it's about service life. Iridiums last longer, that's it. If you're looking at performance there are a number of different plug styles but honestly I don't think they'd give you much. You'd be so much better off doing other things (or smarter still buying a larger capacity bike like an FZR400) if you are looking for power gains. BTW, why aren't you onto your no spark issue?
All I know is I have recently had a massive increase in power since putting them in. Also I think it's fun to squeeze as much as possible out of a 250 hehe.
You did say you had to reset the idle circuit maybe that's spot on this time. so that may by the main reason it's easier to start and seems more powerful!
well if snipping your leads and semi cleaning the ignition circuit makes that much difference i highly recommend it to all! #tryIXplugsanyway =P
U want the most out of it mate put it up on dyno and get it tuned u want air fuel mix spot on for best power curve a spark plug ain't gonna do it otherwise we all would have them
Iridium plugs are just for longer life, but new plugs always give the perception of more power compared to old ones. In reality, as the plugs wear and the gap changes you lose power over time. New, clean, plugs with correct gap set and the bike appears to have more power.
