vw air cooled motors were designed in the 1930,s and should have stayed there.they weigh more than a 2 litre nissan 200b motor.horse power is low for capacity as they were meant to run constantly at 2700 rpm.if anything goes wrong inside the vertically split crankcase the cost is prohibitive as once the crankcase is split it should be surface ground and the motor line bored for crank and cam.the crankshaft is press fitted together with the main bearings assembled on the crank before it is pressed together.this is a precision job to align.the barrels have no head gaskets and are torqued to 28 foot lbs.heads are prone to crack between valve seats and spark plug hole.the plus is if you have a big wallet they can be taken out to 2.5 litre by enlarged barrells and replacement crankshafts. over 87.5 mm barrells the crank cases need to be bored out so they fit.they can be bored to 95 mm but this seriously weakens the block.the camshaft has a fibre timing gear made of cocconut fibre and resin and if you beef up the valve springs the teeth strip. it can be replaced with an alloy or steel gear but to do that the crank case has to be split then reco-ed.the top end is easy with replacement parts readily available from mexico and other countries.the barrels come with new pistons and rings fitted and you fit a paper gasket to bottom of barrel ,press piston down to gudgeon pin shows, push gudgeon out and fit piston to conrod, push in gudgeon and refit circlip. after 4 times fit head to each bank and torque in 3 stages.do i like these motors----NO WAY.hitlers revenge.
