Motorcycle licensing discussion paper: improving road safety for motorcycle riders in Queensland
We are seeking your views on how to improve the safety of motorcycle riders in Queensland. In particular, we’d like feedback about:

    • testing and licensing requirements to get a motorcycle learner licence
    • the requirements to progress from a learner licence to a restricted (RE) and to an unrestricted (R) motorcycle licence.
Your feedback will help shape the future motorcycle licensing system in Queensland.

    The discussion paper is attached.

Geez, asking the general public for input is a surprise, wonder if they'll listen.
The one big issue is there's no high speed experience & consequence options for young riders & drivers for that matter.
We need to get the kids on our big car tracks & give them some experience, show them what happens when you go past the grip levels of your tyres, what happens when you brake too late & miss the corner.
Both my kids got plenty of race experience & they drive well & within their vehicles limits, they well know what happens when you push it too far.

Mate very appt that you bring this up. As you know I was nearly knocked of whilst riding to your place yeaterday. I also watched with interest the news story on the new stats out last night.
Out of the 60 % increase in traffic accidents involing bikes I would like to know where these happened( cities v country) and at what time of day. How many were bike at fault and vise versa. My personal view is that untill people that are caught texting whilst driving a motor vheicle are shot or at least have there fingers removed that the rate of road accidents will continue to rise.

Mate, couldn't agree with you more. Stats can and usually are one sided. We simply have no real idea what's what.
My thought is this.....hands free in car = FINE. Cars should be fitted with an activation devise that cancels phone reception whilst on the move.....this would allow greater concentration on the road.
Also would like to know how many more motorcycles are registered and using our highways and roads, this may explain certain stats.
I read the survey today and frankly none of it is addressing the real issue pertaining to riding a motorcycle, questions were lam at best, alas it appears they are hell bent on imposing more restriction.....car drivers have much to answer. End of rant
Sorry mate, didn't see you.............doesn't sit well with me.

Well said guys. My problem is you can get your bike licence after doing a 6 hour course. Many of the new RE LAMS riders can't brake properly, and are a danger to themselves. I believe there should be a log book process similar to a car licence plus Q-Ride to get your licence would be a good starting point. At least that way, the new riders will actually have a clue when let loose on the roads by themselves.

Q-ride has to be more about actual rider training. Not just basic bike handling. The current course is a joke and buggar all time is spent on braking and how to ride a bend.

Car drivers... I agree Phil. Not only just texting and driving, but having bloody headphones in while driving.

Wise move I think....you'll have to have 2 years experience at least before they let you loose??? When will they cease harassing motorcycle riders.

i agree that more training/experience is needed by all users on the road before getting a licence. i am blessed with the fact i don't care what others think of me and take my time when i am not 100% sure.
