My U-turns suck!!!

    is it just practice? how do i make my u-turns better? i can go around a little roundabout quite easily...but i cant do a u-turn on a narrow road... so it may be partly psychological...

    i have my P's test in a month and i really need to get more practice...

    Slow. Look farther into the turn. Start wide and work your way towards the inside. Slow w/very little lean.

    it is practice. As Tim said - start wide and gradually move in. Easiest to practice in a parking lot as there is no traffic and if you do make a mistake you can always bring the bike upright without worry of hitting a curb.

    From what I understand some members on this site found the fzr250 difficult to do the u-turn on for their test, and instead rented out the bikes available at the test site (usually cb250's). They are much easier to do u-turns on than the fzr250. Having said that, it isn't impossible on the fzr250 and it is always good practice.

    thanks for the tips guys... i think i have been leaning too much.... we have to be able to do a u-turn in 6.1m for the p's test.... i can do it in about 7 - 7.5 m at the moment...so i think i have a lot of practice coming my way...

    i'd prefer not to have to hire a bike for the test... i'd rather learn how to ride MY bike properly.....

    Weird how in melbourne, as far as I know not many places will allow u to use ur own bike for the tests. Due to insurance purposes.

    Keep practising u'll find urself improving in no time.

    A parking lot is a great place. Try to do the turn inside of 2 spaces. Should be just about right.

    I practiced like crazy for that U turn.. i rekon about 200 U turns.. What i do is go in 2nd gear so its smoother for the exit. I roll in about 15/20, counterbalancewith my steering almost locked to the tank. I can make it in 5metre i think. Practice makes perfect... mind you i dropped the bike twice.. just learnin how to counter balance by riding in circles non stop LOL

    I never knew different - went to motorcycle training academy and tehy were happy for em to use my fzr250 for the test. The only problem was it was a 40 degree day, and my fzr started to overheat because it was not moving fast enough for air to go through the rad. I had to sit out for an hour during practice to let my bike cool. Had company though - a guy on a cbr was in the same situation.

    Haha really? Maybe they've changed since u did it boz :p. MTA, thats the one in dandenong isn't it? I think so, thats where I went to get mine.

    yeah - MTA in dandenong. They were happy to let me use my bike. That was 4 years ago now.

    Always look where you want to go. I found that when I started I kept looking down at the ground and found I always had poor balance. But if I looked at the end of the U turn where you straighten up to get out of the U turn you do it much easier.

    Also ride the rear brakes and keep on the throttle so you keep your momentum.

    The Ps test in NSW was recently changed. You only get 1 hr 15 mins to practice but it was piss easy. Just gotta remember to do your head checks <!-- s:D --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_biggrin.gif" alt=":D" title="Very Happy" /><!-- s:D -->

    was the P's test more of a "test" environment, or more of a "do this, and if you do it wrong, have another go" type environment?

    When you practice they advise you on alot of things to help you improve. But once the test starts your on your own.

    The instructor will tell you are each stage what you have to do and then you do it. They dont comment either way when you are performing the test. At the end they will say you have passed or failed and what your score was.

    So make sure you use the practice time wisely. If you feel you have trouble in a particular area get him to watch you in the pratice session and he will advise on how you can do it better.

    Its not as hard as it seems if you had some practice so dont worry too much.

    Boz: I had the same prob with the FZR cutting out due to getting too hot - made it really hard to do the witches hats and u-turn.
    Chiang: I had intended using my bike too, but just found it too difficult. Plus didn't want to run the risk of dropping it, seeing as I'd just spent $850 getting the fairings repaired a few weeks before (I bought it with damage).

    Unless you're going to practise extensively on a replica of the course, I'd advise you to take along the extra cash you may need to hire a bike, that way you should be able to jump on one of their bikes if necessary.

    It was dead easy on the CB250 - I found the witches hats farking hard on the fizzer...not just the u-turn.

    Yeh i had some issue, bike overheated so quickly.. im happier now that winter is coming up.. my bike prefers that weather alot better.
