Need to replace chain and sprockets on 93 across

    Should i just replace it with the standard suzuki chain? I heard there may have been a lighter chain available?

    Whats the cheapest place to source it? i've got a quote from http://www.suziparts.com.au/ which didn't seem too bad, around 350ish all up?

    How long does it take to do on your own and where can I get specialty tools (all I need is a chain breaker right?)

    As for a chain breaker, depending on the brand of chain , you might find that there is a master link which can be un-done without actually breaking the chain. Replacing the sprockets and chain will take some time as the rear wheel needs to be removed as does the lower fairings to access the front sprocket. If you do undertake this yourself, can I ask you get heaps of photos and post a "how to" in the tech tips section.

    Howdy, I'm running the ebay special sprockets and chain (mine came with a regina o ring chain) that i got given with the thing.

    6000km on it and all's well so far haven't had to adjust it or any such. Only thing is to make sure you get one with the hollow rivet link in it, trying to rivet the type with the solid rivet pin (what i believe comes with the cheap kits) is a complete ass of a job!!

    Ive got a few pics of the job so i'll whack up a guide soonish.

    Just thought I'd give a heads up re: changing sprockets and chain. The chain for the Suzuki Across is a 520 pitch and a good chain such as RK will set you back about $120.00. Rear sprocket about $60.00 and around $25.00 for the front, Around $200.00 all up.
    Changing the chain and sprocket is not that difficult. The side fairing will need to be loosen or removed so as to gain access to the front sprocket cover. Should have a lock tag securing the nut in place but some people discard them. If you have a rattle gun it is simple, if not you may need someone to assist with bike in gear and rear brake applied. If lock tag is missing please use loctite to secure. Rear sprocket need wheel to be removed from bike. Remove sprocket from wheel hub and place in a vice so as to undo 5 or 6 bolts securing the sprocket. If you are changing the bolts securing the sprocket no need for loctite, however if re using the old bolts use a small amount of loctite on each bolt to secure, we don't want these babies coming loose.
    Now the chain, Re install the back wheel making sure that the adjuster are loosen and that axle and wheel are all the way forward. You will need a chain breaker or an angle grinder to remove links. Use the old chain coupled with the new chain to fed it through ( so much easier) The lock pin will secure the chain when cut to length. You are nearly done. Adjust the chain with your 2 adjuster until you have around a finger and a half movement, tighten axle nuts and test with you seated on the bike, minor adjustment maybe necessary. Think your done at this stage apart from measuring with verniers if you have them adjuster to make certain wheel is straight. Hope this helps you out.

    Another question. About 2-3 months after owning the bike all of a sudden it started vibrating, just before that I had been hearing noises from the bike which sounded like a keychain rattling. I've never figured out what the vibration has been as the bikes run fine. I've been meaning to take it to a mechanic to have it looked at, but it seems he dosen't have a clue what it could be either.

    Can be felt throughout the bike, especially through the footpegs and it vibrates through the whole tacho.

    What is the status of your chain, try putting the bike up on a rear stand, start the engine and put it 1st gear and watch the chain. Let us know the outcome.

    Did they change the way the sprocket mounts on the later model across'?

    Mines just got a circlip holding the sprocket on the splines.

    They may have done, seems to me that one I did had a lock tag, could be wrong.

    Ok i'll try that tomorrow.

    But I already know that I have a really tight spot and a really saggy spot, but thats only been over the last 2 months. I've had my rear changed just 4 months ago and it was apparently ok. I'll try and record it when i put it on the stand.

    I figure i have the tight spot due to the chain being worn hence why i'm replacing it, although i was concerned it was because I messed up the wheel alignment only using the dodgy indicators on the swingarm...

    question, do you guys think it is really necessary to use expensive O rings chains on your 250's, I say no, I use standard link chains on all my bikes up to 90BHP, sure you have to adjust reguarly and oil them but if you do that they will give good service and will set you back about $65.00 every 2 years.
