New FZR

    Hi,
    Just got my L's and bought a 1988 FZR250 - complianced in 2003 and with very low (8000) km's. Its in great nick, but I was just wondering if I should do any servicing as it obviously hasn't been ridden much (the last owner lost interest). Initially the engine cut out whenever I came to a stop but I've speeded up the idle and this has helped - although it did it again yesterday and I had to push start it (thanks to the BMW guy) 'cos the battery was flat. Any ideas??

    I've got an 88 model too, but with a lot more km's (just clicked over the 40,000 mark)
    Mine hadn't been ridden very much either, which is actually not a good thing with them. They don't like to sit at all. It would be a really good idea to service it, clean your fuel tank out, all that sort of stuff.
    Your km's mightn't be genuine either, not many 16 year old bikes have only 8,000km on them. And if it is genuine, chances are your carbies are going to need looking at, the rings may be gummed up due to lack of use..

    yeah, alot of people wind the odometers back before theyre imported which is a bad thing.
    I think its better to get a bike thats got a few km's on it. That way, its less likely to have the odometer wound back.

    At least that way you would know the km's on it are genuine.

    I would always do a fairly good service on a new-used bike (new bikes you needn't worry because you know it is definitely new and all new fluids and the like are new) - I may be paranoid with this but I just see it as common sense. After all you really don't know if the oil and filter are clean, if the brake fluid is still in good order, etc. A good service will just give you some knowledge about the status of your bike.

    Yes..welcome mate..ive got an 88 fzr as well. Where abouts in melb do u live? 8,000 kms isn't very much..I think ive nearly put on 2,000 since getting my L's like 3 months ago now...so 8,000 for a 16 year old bike seems a lil suss.

    Thanks for the feedback. I was suss also on the k's but if you see the bike (its absolutely spotless and brand-spanker looking - especially the engine) you might change your mind. Either way I reckon I'll get the service done (any suggestions on a mechanic?) when I can afford it - I changed the oil and filter but anything else is pretty much beyond me at the moment. Oh, I live in swanky middle park (near st. kilda).

    The mechanic I like to use is located in Hughesdale @ http://www.centralmotorcycles.com.au. I trust them - the same 2 guys have been around for quite a while, their main business tends to be refurbishing classic bikes, and they are extremely fair in their prices (they underquote everyone else 95% of the time - usually only by a few dollars but it all adds up).

    I have also heard good things about the bikeshops on Nepean Highway (Brighton) - I think Kawasaki is one that was good. A1 motorcycles is always reliable too (I have dealt with them in Ringwood, and the same people own the one in Brighton).
