hi all,
im new here and to riding in general. But this seems like a good place to get started. im looking to buy a bike, i am looking for an FZR250, what a surprise. can anyone give me some advice or tips on buying a first bike?

Also, i have seen FZR's listed as "FZR250RR" and "FZR250", is there a difference, if so what are they?

any help would be appreciated, and who knows, in time maybe i will be riding with some of you.

Cheers
Rhys.

Edit: sorry in advance if starting a new topic pisses anyone off. And i live in Sydney Australia if anyone was wondering.

I'd start by doing a little bit of background reading in a few of the stickies we've got in the various sections of this forum... but none the less i'll give you the quick FZR250 101.

3 main models...
2KR : twin separate headlights, older tubular steel frame, some have EXUP some don't.
3LN1 : twin separate headlights, newer deltabox frame, almost all have EXUP, often believed to be a halfway point between the REAL 3LN (the 3LN3) and the 2KR.
3LN3+ : Single headlight, twin horizontal brakelights, deltabox frame, EXUP, spin on oil canister; ...arguably the best of the FZR's.

Branding/labelling:-
FZR 250 is usually the 2KR.
FZR 250 R is usually the 3LN1.
FZR 250 RR is usually the 3LN3+...

...but of course as these are all imported 250's, the likes of Sumoto & Southside make sure they respray them all so the R/RR/RRR no longer means anything aside from a direct reflection of the price tag. The more R's the bigger the $$$.

Shopping for an FZR:-
As with most bikes the newer the better, the lower the (REAL) km's... the better. The 3LN3's tend to have a higher associated value given their updated (comparatively) styling and usually the best performance of the FZR's with the increased redline.
Make sure it doesn't blow smoke on startup or running, but don't be surprised if you get a bit of black smoke as that's likely fuel flow through meaning the carbs need a bit of work. Most FZR carbs are quite tired, and as such they've developed a reputation as being a bit of a nuisance to tune and balance. Aside from that, FZR's are just like all other 250's... usually a little tired. Check them thoroughly and you usually get a decent bike, otherwise a new engine/gearbox can usually be picked up from a wrecker or ebay for less than $1k.

Buying advice:-
Buy privately and get the bike checked by a mechanic.

If my memory serves me the 3LN3's also rev to 18,500 although there may be a few exceptions to that clause. I know the revlimiter is a bit higher than that though.

New here too...

Rather than starting up another thread to introduce myself, I figured I'd add it here...

Heyas, Ive been a huge fan of this site for a while now, although it was only last week when I managed to secure a FZR for myself.. now all I need is a licence...

A massive thanks to all the know alls who keep this place rich with advice and how-to's - doubtless the amount of experience your guys have and the willingness to share it is the single biggest asset to the FZR 250, probably in the world.

The plan is to polish the bike up nice - Im thinking shades of gun metal and black engine parts and white fairings with simple features, and what someone was saying about having brakelights (ie. red neons) running along the inside tips of the side fairings to shine back- wicked idea.

So thanks again you people, other people are choosing FZR's because of you!

Anyone notice the Yamaha decal on the left side, as opposed to the right?

Yeah TiMBuS, props to your idea!

Im a bit of a good boy so Im hoping having the red lights hooked up to the brakes will satisfy the cops.

I was thinking of using strips of LED's, with frosted perspects plastic to imitate Neons, hopefully getting a redder (rather than pink) light or something... figure I'll need to bulk up the alternator some though to increase the current.

Yeah, the white fairings were inspired by this RGV I have a picture of, it looks really good!

You guys were talking somewhere of getting this site out there, has anyone thought of having some www.fzr250.com decals made to suit the standard Yamaha FZR ones? I supose the 'www's arent that necissary, could just have FZR250.COM or something. Similar to the EXUP or GENESIS decals, nothing overly obvious but they could be made to match the standard ones. Then they could be sent out to people on this site who want them, what do you guys think?

Welcome to all the newbies.

Oh, the sticker/logo has been a pipe dream of a few people for a while now so it’s nothing new. I think talk about it will pick up again once Boz returns from his world tour. I am in favor of a simple FZR250.com white letters clear background matching with the Yamaha FZR font. You can read up on it here and maybe even submit one of your own designs.
