1989 Yamaha FZR250R 3LN1 - YouTube seems to be starting up fine last week or so. put the new fuel filter on today find out of tomorrow if it works
so new fuel filter didnt make a difference so far. had my check ride for my license and it acted up all day, started off with not wanting to start again, then once it fired up heard a clicking noise and found cylinder 2 spark plug lead sparking on the head. had abit of coolant on it. then rear brake light deciding not to work. fixed those but still seems to have a high idle issue after running awhile. the slow walking pace test it was not happy just kept shutting off, had to use another bike and passed it fine. Local track was having a practice day at a go kart track so had a go at that, first time on a track with a road bike. ran pretty good for a little while but started to break up abit and not have a lot of power at low revs out of corners which is a new thing. it would be intermittent but eventually just gave up and went home. so have to pull it apart again. seems like it must still have an air leak from high idle, not sure what else could be going on with the powerloss and stuttering seems to be leaking abit of coolant out something near the filler neck so think the radiator cap might be abit faulty, looks to be the original one. cant see much for coil leads any off another bike that will fit?
Just put in the throttle slide kit from litetek as i missed that when i ordered the rebuild kit they sell. Also straightened out the 2 end butterfly valves that were bent. But now the bikes seems like the throttle is just stuck on. It will idle at 4-8000rpm and if throttle is touched at all itll go up more. Cable and linkage returns fine but feels a little stiff as it always has. Kinda at a loss cant see how or whats going on now.
check the position of the idle adjuster, it may need to be turned town to reduce idle speed. May also need a throttle balance. Give the throttle cables more slack so there is 2-3mm of free play
thats another thing is not even touching the idle adjuster, for it to touch its nearly maxed out. it seems to only go back together one way and i have another set of carbies and its in same position. also got about 2-3mm of slack in the cable Aswell. the linkage part the cable connect too moves freely.
Are there any air gaps around the throttle butterflies? Shine a light underneath them and look on top. Compare the undamaged ones to the ones you straightened. Another possibility is an air leak - check the carby to cylinder head boots.
Furthering what Linkin's suggested .. those boots for sure, and also the airbox->carb rubbers . if they feel stiff, replace em, I got em off impex for a pretty penny but genuine yamaha, and the carb->head manifolds off ebay (your only option but cheap as chips) they get very hard after a few years. should be standard advice for refreshing FZR's but i didn't find out about it until halfway through the resto process
first thing i replaced was the boots. thinking of just getting rid of the bike. this is everything ive done that i can remember. Litetek Carby rebuild kit New Genuine Yamaha Carby to manifold boots New genuine yamaha airbox to carby boots emulsion tube and needles Diaphrams Litetek Throttle shaft seals Replaced cracked Airbox with a non cracked one New Airfilter Valve clearances Oil change oil filter New Battery Fixed bent throttle butterflies
still got the bike, ended up putting later model carbies on. fixed it completely. Heavier fork oil and rebuilt forks. new pads all round new rear master cylinder new front brembo master cylinder off an RSv4 i think clutch lever off a triumph lol fresh Pirelli tyres been pretty good now starts first go everytime. haven't ridden it as much as i'd like still having abit of an issue with the leads sparking on the head i'd like to replace the leads and coils to eliminate that becoming worse. also clutch basket is fairly clunky
Nice work mate The 10k ohm spark plug caps are NLA, no one makes any replacements Best thing these days is to turf the old coils and leads, fit coil on plug replacements, and wire them up. It's not difficult, wasted spark system, pots 1 and 4 in series, pots 2 and 3 in series, hook up to original plugs on the wiring harness. Just have to make sure the replacement coils have the right resistance Did this on my 3LN6 with 4x 2nd hand Denso 129700-4400 ignition coils from Suzuki GSXR models, plentiful and cheap Connectors can be had as well, just need the right crimping tool to do the plugs https://jaydeeautocables.com.au/collections/connectors/products/japanese-coil-pack-plug
