hey everyone, I'm another new member I bought a non running zxr250c with a box of spares about 2 months ago combine that with absolutely no bike experience probably not the smartest decision but it's definitely been fun so far, she runs now but I've hit another hickup while trying to get her upto roadworthy (headlight randomly works, yes randomly lol) so I'll probably be posting again soon for help unless I can figure this one out...

Hopefully I'll be riding with some of you soon

Welcome mate, got any photos of the bike?

As for your headlight issue, if its intermittent you have a bad earth or faulty wiring. Or something wrong in the headlight assembly.

However the ZXR Regulator/Rectifiers are notorious for overheating, so check that as well.

Hey thanks for your response, that's how I got it running in the first place the reg/rec was toasty the plug was burnt and the loom crispy, I had a spare loom and reg in my box of spares, soldered that up threw in a new battery and away she went, it works solidly for the most part then turns off a k down the road, flick the high beams then back down it will come back on sometimes, sometimes I have to leave the high beams on sometimes the high beams flash and then go off as well, sometimes the lights go for 10 seconds sometimes 10 minutes if that helps, I'm at my girlfriends but will post pics when I get home, are you still thinking it's an earth problem or something more? Do you thinK it Would be worth buying a new reg/rec to rule that out entirely?

I would be perusing the switch block, it's a place we seldom look at yet it's exposure to the elements is constant.
Junk and moisture get on the contacts within.....WD40 has always helped me in this area.

mine was also butchered by someone with a soldering iron to get the lights to stay on 24/7, apparently when imported.

could be a cause if chance's is similar.

Thanks everyone, for all your help I'll have a look at the switch block tonight and see if I have a spare in my box of goodies hopefully this is my last hurdle before roadworthy so I can really start enjoying my bike!

I'll upload some photos of the bike tonight she's nothing pretty atm but I've fallen in love with the 18k redline, you know what they say real beauty is on the inside hehe

While I've got your attention is there any other common things that go wrong which I should look out for?

    Thanks again everyone :)

You've got a good sound motorcycle which I'm certain will provide you a stable platform for some time.
The one issue that raises it's head most often is cam chain and tensioner....they get a little noisy with wear. Also the R/R is located in an odd position and is subjected and prone to overheating, just something to keep an eye out for. Having said that, the zxr 250 is a great bike so..........go and enjoy it :thumb_ups:

Resize your image in paint, save it, upload to somewhere like imgur and copy the bbcode IMG link, paste that here and when you submit it shows the image
