    guys,
i have done an oil change and filter change and my sight glass has nothing visible on it. while i had the oil out i took the liberty to swap the sight glass as the old one was so crusty you couldnt even see though it

how much more oil do i need to add before i see any show up on the sight glass? the manual says i should have well and truely put enough in so far.

your across should only need 2.9l with a filter change

ok, now im a little worried. i wonder if this is the reason for the rattle i get at 5 grand when the bike is in motion. 3 litres of oil and sight glass is clear. i checked the manual for the direction of oil flow thru motor and there could possibly be a blockage in the main oil gallery preventing oil from coming back thru to the clutch plates where the sight glass is, hence the reason why no oil visible on the sight glass

i started the bike, let it run for about 20 seconds and shut it down. its runs fine, but still no oil at sight glass

however when i dropped the oil and filter i got 3.5 litres of oil out

when start the bike the oil pressure light goes out straight away

    Hey Mate
Drain the oil, go back to basics and once completely drained, refill with manufacturers recommended dosage. Do not overfill, damage can occur. Once filled start engine and listen for any anomaly.
Don't understand why sight glass does not show oil level. An issue I would persue with a mechanic. Keep us posted.

sorted. pulled the lower half of the fairing off and had a good look in day light, oil has been pouring out of the gasket on both sides of engine where the clutch plate and stator is

lesson learnt, dont work on the bike at night time when your drunk and when there is bad lighting

do it sober and in the day time

i have removed the clutch cover and cleaned all the crap off between the gasket and the cover, man im surprised at the crap that was there.

drowned the engine block and the clutch cover in gasket compound as reseal. same with the stator side.

now the bike has oil showing in the sight glass after i added a bit more.

    lol

now im going to start ripping more fairing off the bike and find this stupid rattle above 5 grand thats been annoying me for months

found the rattle. remove the "man bag" from bike, its from the top of the motor, im betting the shave shims

i got a quote from my local suzuki dealer for the timing chain, chain tensioner, and valve shims to be done , they also wanted to service it and do the spark plugs, oil, etc with 8 hours labour and a grand total of $1,155

you got to be kidding me.

i have never done the valve shims before, but i sure am seriosly thinking about doing them myself and while im at it i ill do the timing chain/tensioner on my own as well

anyhow, at least i know now what it is

    Haha! good times :)

Funny story, i was fixing a friends bike and put in a bit over 2.5L (it takes 2.5 for a full rebuild) and couldn't see any oil in the sight glass. WTF! so i put in 500ml more and still none. Hang on something isn't right here  :icon_scratch:

Pulled the sump plug and drained it all out into a clean container, low and behold 3L came out. So WTF was the problem? I was so used to looking at the oil stained sight glass on my bike that i thought this bike was empty when in fact it was totally full!  :-[ Lesson learnt lol!!

$1150 is MEGA for a valve clearance adjustment. I wouldn't pay more than $500 for the labour at the very most. The parts are cheap (tensioner is $80 and shims are like $1 each) and its very simple to do on the across compared to say a cbr250rr. for nearly $1200 I'd want new sprockets, the forks done and maybe the steering bearings too.

Definitely try it yourself if you have a bit of mechanical know how. I did a big write up on it over on aussie street bikes step by step and the service manual for the across is very thorough. If you have a torque wrench give it a go. If not then just strip it down and trailer the bike to the mechanics and have them do the valve clearances, then put it back together  yourself :)

    Good luck!

It reminds me of my mate trying to do a oil change in his car after putting almost 20l into a small front wheel drive car the guy that owned the workshop come out to check on him. apparently putting the sump plug in before you start to refill the oil is a good idea :BangHead: .

After that he always took his car to the mechanic instead.

im glad you guys think the $1155 quote is over the top. its actually from the local suzuki dealer  :o $720 of it is labor alone all 8 hours of it. :icon_scratch:

anyhow, had a chat to misses_ozbiker today, getting prices together for the parts and going to do the thing myself

Good for you mate, those prices are so over the top.
I feel fortunate that my mechanic on the Sunshine coast is an honourable man and doesn't kill you with high prices.
Also has shared much wisdom along the way, yes I am lucky.
