Full choke and persistence. I leave for work at 6 am most days, and even though I keep my bike garaged it still has troubles. Usually takes me a little while for it to start. It will catch, then die (repeat many times). Eventually it will catch but not be running on all cylinders - I let it run like this for a bit just to warm up. Then I kill it, and next start (or two) usually works.

    I have also found:
    - much easier for a week or two after I clean my spark plugs
    - easier when I shut off my headlight (I also worry that I will run down my battery when it takes so long to start, so this alleviates that problem as well)

Anyhow was just thinking, still havent managed to get the bike started, last time it was up and running was 3 days ago but no engine wont even tick over (had a huge backfire which woke the neighbors!!) so now im thinking it might be the timing. Has anyone ever fixed this???

    hard starting

    Hard starting is caused by
    valves needing adjust
    fouled plugs
    weak spark
    carbs rich (dirty)
Look at the carbs first and clean them...
have a look at the plugs. Are they black and sooty?
    or nice and tan
if cleaning carbs works then there ya go...
if you keep having to clean your plugs then you need to look at the carbs and air filter cause you are running too rich.
