Since i have to do the brakes on my bike and the wheel will be off i was planning to clean up the axel and bearings, wondering what the go is with taking out bearings then re-using them.

also have no bearing press or removal tool which will make things more dodgy.

Hey zixxer, if the wheels are off your bike , why not get your local bike to supply and fit new bearings, they have the tools and skill, I had them done when I did the nsr and it was money well spent

honestly would rather do it myself for the experience if i can. if i mess it up i will take it down to the shop.

there are new bearings on ebay but they are in the UK so 2 odd weeks in postage time.

Fair cop, I know my local bearing place would have them in stock, I almost always damage bearings getting them out, I use the bar from my socket set to get them out and I have used a socket and a rubber hammer to fit the new ones

You cant reuse bearings once u wack them to remove them ... and if u can get the seals out without damage , good luck.

If they are the open ones where u see the balls then they are ancient
Take them to your local bearing shop and they will match them with new seals also ..... mine for the Fizz were cheap as chips.
They arnt specific ZXR parts , they are just bearings.

Then study a few youtube how tos to install them properly so they are square , fully in and not damaged .
And dont forget the hub/axle inner tube before u do the second one !

Its not a hard job but u have to use caution to get it right and not damage anything.

Laying the wheel on another spare tyre is the the best method I found.

decided to have a go, i see what your saying about the ancient ones where you can see the balls, had one on the sprocket that was covered in string that had melted into the balls and wasnt moving without some muscle, the rest were sealed well, couldnt get the seal off without breaking it.

just ended up cleaning up the one on the sprocket and cleaned the axles which were covered in rust and OLD grease, apart from that the others spun freely so i'll leave it at that, might replace the one on the sprocket for peace of mind but the rear definitely spins better now.

Wheel bearing are sealed and once seal broken will never reseal they are cheap to replace take out and go to bearing shop they will supply u new ones however open bearings can be reused if removed properly but good practice as a fitter bearings should be replaced especially if grease is gone because they have gone over 110 Celsius and burnt grease out which means they are no longer efficient nor effective

Also tip for putting new bearings in is to use the old ones:
Place new bearing in place, all bearings have a interference fit usually .02 of a mm so will be tight.
Next place old bearing on top of new and tap around edge evenly with a mallet until bearing is at least have way in and won't kick of square.
The. Using something like a bronze bar tap edges evenly for example at 180 back and forth till bearing against its shoulder.
Also never hit bearing out edge with a hard still always use abit of bronze or ally it won't damage bearing
