    Hey Guys,

Depressed. I put trhe Fizzer into Moorooka Yamaha in Bris to get a few things checked that I was struggling with and the estimated costs just kept mounting. So being fairly handy I pulled the plug and asked for just an eval instead which I could tell they werent too pleased about. <!-- s:) --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_smile.gif" alt=":)" title="Smile" /><!-- s:) -->

One of the things was that the battery was charging at 16-17V on idle and they said that the rectifier was stuffed and she would need a new one as well as a battery quoted @ $200+ LOL.

Anyway, on the way home from there and she was running really great as I had the carbs vacuum balanced as had no tool and the thing just died about 3 k's from home. (On a very steep freeway hill exit in 35 degree heat no less) anyway, like completely dead nada, zip no lightys whatsoever. I finally found that they had NOT plugged the rectifier back in and I am guessing that as a result this has probably burnt the crap out of sumthing else. (The really bad news is that the fuse is AOK. I have plenty of those spare in my kit as have been caught out before).

P.S Yes I'm pissed at Yamaha but they did a really good job on a few other bits so I dont know how pissed to get in the scheme of things as they told me there were big electrical issues that needed addressing, Um yeah, BEFORE I pulled the plug!

I am thinking that this may have blown the CDI / headlights or somthing else as there is just nothing on key turn.

Has anyone ever had no power to anything whatsoever as a result of regulator burnout?

Anyway, I am going to pick up my $50 regulator tomorrow and a new batt and work from there...

If anyone has any suggestions to add to my diagnosing tomorrow it would be GREATLY appreciated and add to your positive Karma as I had a really crap day as a result.

    Cheers

thats some bad luck there, mate. to put another light on it, i have once driven a car away from a service and found the speedo cable still disconnected (ie no speedo reading), and yesterday i got my bike back from the mechanics (they'd repaired a brake fluid leak and oil gasket leak) to find when i got home they'd cracked the fairing up around one of the securing screws.
Anyway sorry i can;t help much with your problem, you'd hope the new battery and RR will fix the problem.

Work on the power to the lights as a solution to finding the problem. Obviously something has let go from the battery to lights and that would be supplying power to the rest of the bike as well. Perhaps a fusible link in the battey circuit,
If the headlights were turned on I doubt the voltage could get that high, normally there is not enough power from the alternator to charge the battery at idle..
Is there any power on the bike anywhere, brake lights, dash, etc???

In this order using a multimeter to see if power is getting thru. Use one (black) lead on metal earth (Negative) and other (red) to test for 12v at -

    1 - battery positive
2 - check main fuse near battery
    3 - check ignition switch
4 - check wiring between battery and lights

    hope that helps

Dead bang on the money starter.

The battery had been fried by the rectifier not working and had completely drained...

Replaced both on Sat and smoothly charging like a champ at 13-14V max.

Thanks all for the input guys.

    Cheers
    Nate.
