Repairing/restoring 3 different 250s - 2 x Honda and a ZZ-R250

    Hi all,

    Found the site while looking for a workshop manual for the 1997? Kawasaki ZZ-R250 I just bought.

    I'm currently working on a restoring a 1982 Honda CB250 RS (I grew up as a pillion on one of these), a few upgrades to my 2007 Honda CBF250F as well.

    Other than this, I have a 2004 Kawasaki KLR650 - obviously not a 250 but damn light on her toes though!

    Figured I'd say hi. Not sure on the forum rules about linking to it (will read them shortly) but if anyone is interested I'm blogging my progress on the restorations. Send me a message if you're interested in knowing more - will most likely post a few shots here too now :)

    One of my mates had a CB250 back in the day and yes I too pillioned on it for many a ride .... we were actually going out with sisters and went many a time thru some great twisty back roads to visit them 7 days a week ....ahh those were the days. :bowdown:

    Finally got my P's early this year, 15 years after letting my L's expire for the second time in my 20's. It had been a long time between rides until last year!

    No pics of the Ninja yet - here are a couple of the Hondas:

    The 2007 CBF250F - I call him Captain Jack Black, as he came with a pirate tankpad and matching decal on the fork.

    I've replaced the missing grab bar, chain and sprockets, found some rectangular mirrors more like the original ones and fitted Daytona heated grips since these were taken.

    I've also managed to track down a centre-stand to make any further maintenance a bit less stressful. Unfortunately neither my housemate or my girlfriend were able to hold the bike so I could fit the springs this weekend and it's definitely a two-person job!

    He's also missing the top of the air box - I've ordered one along with a front left indicator housing as the previous owner dropped him. Slight dent in the tank on that side too but not worth replacing it just yet.

    I'll be replacing or respraying the tank to match the red panels I've bought, as mum's was a red one.

    Here's the collection of parts I currently have to put on (taken before I attached the master brake cylinder, speedo cable, instruments and right mirror)

    The mirrors and chain were from Jack - I figure until I get the electrics working and he's fired up for the first time I can re-use them.

    A couple of oddities I've noticed with Eric so far:

    Someone's started trying to turn him into a bobber or cafe racer at some stage, as the back of the frame was chopped off.

    Fortunately one of my neighbours fixes cars and may be reasonably handy with a welder. I'll have a chat to him and may be lob a couple of six-packs his way if he can fix it for me. ;)

    Also some bright spark decided it would be a good idea to cut off the connecting plug for the tail light:

    The rear brake assembly seems to have a few parts missing:

    Also, some of the more observant of you may have noticed the right muffler is missing!
    This seems to be the most expensive part other than a replacement tank.

    I'm pretty good at finding parts on eBay and other parts dealers online - the trouble is finding them at a decent price in Australia and/or with reasonable postage from overseas!

    Currently waiting on a CDI box and bolt kit to arrive before work starts getting serious on this one - not many of the parts from wreckers have come with the bolts to hold them on.

    Will post before and after pics of the Ninja once I get some daylight to work on her. Currently the tank, seat and fairings are off as the previous owner had someone working on the carby a year ago and it was never put back together. She'll more than likely be my girlfriend's bike if and when said girlfriend gets her L's :)

    I'll probably post pics of the Ninja in The Garage once she's back in one piece.
    Hopefully nothing needed to get her working other than a battery charge, a piece of rubber hose for the fuel tank and maybe an air filter.

    Hi and welcome! Great looking bike the CB250 RS, I have a friend with one tucked away in his shed awaiting restoration. I'm hoping he never does anything with it so I can buy it at some stage ;-) so will be watching your project with interest.

    For an exhaust, there are plenty of generic reverse cone megaphone mufflers on eBay at pretty reasonable prices, I recon they would suit the style of the bike well.

    I'm keeping an eye on Gumtree as sometimes almost entire bikes come up cheaper than the combined prices in parts for what I need. Missed one last weekend that would have been perfect!
