Hey fellas, My bike use to run a little rich (would bog down at low revs, kicked in hard at higher revs, 160km per tank). Ive recently replaced the airbox (and air filter) and Im pretty sure its now lean (really responsive down low but seems to struggle to realy wind up). Now this doesnt overly bother me, I like the challenge of having to work with the restrictions (ie. cant just pin throttle and take off), and Im looking foward to seeing how much I get of the next tank. The problem is: when it hits the dead patches in the powerband the bike sounds different, there is almost a whirring noise. Would anyone know if having the bike run like this is doing damage to it? Mucking up the carb balancing? Anything? Thanks in advance! ps. There is no EXUP equipped (seems to be everyones first piece of advise) so it cant be related. And I have the old filter so it will be easy to swap back if I need to.
Running excessivly lean will incease the tendancy of detonation (pre-ignition), increase the temperature of the exhaust valves and pistons. These are all bad things.
sounds like it needs a good tune <!-- s --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_smile.gif" alt="" title="Smile" /><!-- s -->
haha, yeah it probably does need a tune... In regards to pre-ignition: how do you know when this is happening? Is it something subtle or does the bike jolt/jump/lurch/backfire/detonate/fall apart? Thanks for your replies!
Pre-ignition (also called knocking, pinging) makes a sharp high pitch noise not unlike tapping a screwdriver end first on a glass bottle, at least in a car engine it does. You will feel nothing but it eventually breaks the top edges of the pistons above the rings
the whole reason i got outta the fzr'2 was a lean out that MELTED A PISTON. i'm pretty sure leaning out is bad- i have proof. a 250 piston with a friggin hole through the centre of it!
