Hiya,

Can anyone provide pic's, diagrams, instructions or anything that will help me pull apart my carbies so i can service them??

I just bought my fzr 250R a few weeks ago and Im having a few teething problems with it - at low speed or at the light the thing just dies which is a bit scary when u've got a bunch off angry motorist behind you.

A few things I plan on doing to service it are;

clean the airfilter
change the spark plugs to irridium
check the ex-up valve and.......
service the carbies.

Any thing you guys can muster up will help a lot...

Thanks,

Service

Hey B P P

First of all I would like to say it is good to see another biker buying Yamaha power. Now down to bizniz.

Cleaning air filter, if it was anything like mine when I brought my bike CHUCK IT AWAY. I went to my local bike shop and brought a cut to fit "race" filter. They are easy to install and are cheap and really do work well. I got mine for about $7.00 NZ which is dirt cheap. To get at the airbox un-bolt the long bolt that is at the top of the petrol tank (by the triple clamps) then you sould beable to tilt the tank back and hold it up by a large spanner and some time of metal tube (just like holding a car bonnet open). Then unscrew the screws holding the airbox lid on and theres the airfilter and then deal with it. I say get a race filter element and cut it to fit. But its up to you. Then once you are finished just put the lid back on screw it up drop the tank down bolt that up and youve donr the airfilter, easy eh?!

Changing the sparkies isnt an easy job. Make sure you blow all crap out of the head cover before taking sparkies out or that crap might get into your combustion chamber and thats no laugh. Irridum are good sparkies but and I say BUT get the correct ones because FZRs dont like wrong sparkies (trust me)

Checking the EXUP valve is easy peeze. Take the left hand fairing off just sitting under the sump casings you will see a strange looking thing in the exhaust thats the EXUP valve take that silver cover off ( i think they are 4mm grub screws but cant rememeber to well) and then you will see where the cables meet up with the exup valve. Turn the engine on and get some one to rev the engine and if the cables move the exup valve then its doing its job. You sould also when turning the ignition switch to on before you push the start button hear the servo motor do alittle reset sound thats good to hear. If the exup valve dosnt move pull it out of the exup chamber and spray some CRC or WD40 in the moving parts areas they might be alittle sezied from the carbon build up. Smack it back to getter give her a turn over if it still dosnt move look at the servo motor. Spray alittle WD40/CRC in the cables and if it still dosnt work take it to your local motorbike repairs.

Service your carbs, its best left to people that know what they are doing. FZR carbs are known to have bad tempers if not done right. I can email you the correct settings for all the carb parts.

Email us any time

regards
james

Carbie

Hey dude.
Hows the bike?

Right, carbie settings:

Fuel Level (F.L) 10.5mm
Main Jet (M.J) #1,4:#102.5#2,3:#100
Main air jet (M.A.J) #80
Jet Needle (J.N) #1,4:5CL2 #2,3:5C31
Needle Jet (N.J) 0-5
Pilot Air Jet (P.A.J) #107.5
Pilot Jet (P.J) #12.5
Pilot Screw (P.S) 3.0
Valve Seat Size 1.0
Starter Jet (G.S.1) #42.5
Starter Jet (G.S.2) 0.6

With the Pilot Screw, screw it right it then count 3 turns out and make sure its right on.

With the other numbers just check u have the right jets if you dont they bike will be running strange u will have to get the correct ones unless u have performance parts in your engine or race exhaust then u will need the after market jets.

You've done it again J........thanks mate.

That should be enough to keep me busy for a while and hopefully help some of those other FZR beginners in the same position.

Noticed a question unanswered thus far: irridium plugs.

Pretty much anyplace that offers spark plugs could tell you the crossover if you brought your current plugs in. I have ngk CR8EIX plugs (my original plugs before these were CR8E). Gap to set: .7-.8 (they usually come at this setting, but check to be sure)

Serviced the carbies

Hi All,

It's been a while since my last post - got caught up in all the xmas + NYE hype! Anyway down to business - I managed to do most of the things listed in the original post...that is ;

clean the air filter
change the spark plugs to iridium
check the ex-up valve and.......
service the carbies.

The spark plugs were a little bit tricky to get out but with some well placed hand positions managed to get the old ones out (black, fouled and smelled rich with fuel) and get the new ones in. I ended putting the standard ngk cr8e plugs in b/c they were $8ea as opposed to $28ea for iridium ones, and the guy at the bike shop convinced me that the main benefit of iridium plugs is to start it up (and they last a longer).

Checking the ex-up was easy (thanks to all the posts on this site - god bless) gave the cables a slight tighten, sprayed 'em with crc and onto the next task.......the CARBIES!!!!

Proved to be a daunting challenge for a new player in the bike game but having had some experience with old cars I gave it a shot - I first tested the air/fuel mixture with a rather nifty tool (you stick a pipe in the exhaust which then analyses the ratio and gives a reading) and discovered the bike was burning too rich ( as suspected by the flat spot during initial acceleration - I tried to follow a diagram I downloaded off the internet of a (supposedly) fzr 250 carb but found that the pilot screw was not in the same spot as diagram. after some careful examination I managed to find the pilot screw (just to the right of the drain plug) and tuned them to near perfection! The bike is now running beautifully and no longer cut's out at low speed (makes riding a much more enjoyable experience)

PS - If anyone wants to know more details about tuning the carbies you can email me at npovazan@hotmail.com

The air filter I pulled out was made of paper (original I think?) Bike shop told me $120 for a new one which is a lot more then Jarmizz's $7 cut to fit filter. I tried to blow it clean with compressed air but it's still dirty -

Does anyone have any ideas about replacing the current paper filter with a race\sponge filter fairly cheap??

(Feel much better with all that off my chest

yo BPP

Hey there BPP lol

Well nice to see you did all the work ya self. Cheap and you learn **** loads. On the mix screw on the carbs did u set it at 3 turns out??

Air filter is real easy, as I said u should beable to buy just buy a foam pad from ya local bike shop. Easy cheap and works well.

Keep up the good work

Whatttzzz Uupppp J

When you say 3 turns out on the pilot screw do you mean 3 full turns i.e (360 degrees) or 3 half turns (180 degrees)??

I ended tuning the carbies to roughly 1.5 to 2 full turns. I found that 3 full turns would leave it running to rich.

With the air filter did you cut out your old paper one and fit the new sponge one in?? and did you have to cut the sponge to fit??if so how big did you make it

WASSSSSSSSSSSSSS UPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPP

I mean 360 degree turns bro !. 3 Is the factory settings so if you are runnin 2 turns on a hot day reving hard it may start to Detonate cause there ant anuff fuel to feed the beast!!!!!!!!!

With the air filter I had a foam one in there in the first place but yeah I jsut cut it out and cut the new foam one to fit and sealed the edges with silicone so it wasnt to fall out if anything happend!!!!!
