Yes and no. There are different organisations involved in the legislation - both state and federal. This change means that helmets bought overseas or imported by private individuals are no longer non-compliant if they meet certain overseas standards.

The problem is that retailers can't sell or import them.

    Pretty much, yeah.

Hence why I'm interested in the outcome of a national conference on this exact issue happening soon.

Scored a deal on a Shoei TZ-X from Peter Stevens, brand new for $320! Also got the anti-fog and trasnition insert for $100 which i though as okay.

Doesn't really match my cafe racer but damn it is comfortable/safe/quiet and not too obnoxious, wont take any focus from my (expensive) paint job haha IMG_1620.JPG.jpeg IMG_1622.JPG.jpeg

    PS: First helmet yay

I've ended up with two, both RJays. I was chasing something like a Shoei or an Arai or something similar but, to be honest, nothing in the shop fit me as well as the RJay. Once I had bought that a mate with the same weird-shaped head offered me his almost new RJay (which has the very useful flip-down sunvisor inside the helmet) as well because he had gone open-face once he gave up his gixxer for a Harley. I would expect that, once I am a more regular rider, I will shop around for something else but these should get me by for now.

I rode around for years in WA with imported helmets. I just made sure I imported ones that were also available for sale in Australia as there was a loop hole in the WA legislation around "equivalent" helmets. Even got pulled over by the cops a couple of times for RBT's etc - they never checked I didn't think they cared. If they did I had an out. Not sure what the "changes" mean now though.

Australian standards are a bit of a joke IMO. Not only are only SOME of them legislated, but it's not really clear what is what. They basically want a crap load of $ to certify helmets, even then their testing procedure is pretty basic. By memory I don't think they have a "range" of safety for helmets, so you can't really compare ratings. It's either compliant or it's not. In essence that rules out the "more $ spent the higher safety of the helmet" because you don't really know what extra "safety" you're buying unless you start digging into compliance with other standards and understanding their testing procedures then trying to formulate some sort of comparison. Too much work for me.

With such theory, you could spend $1000 on a Shoei or $100 on a HJC and get the same safety level. The biggest difference will be in the feel/comfort lining, and the quality of the paint work. Ironically enough you'd think these should be a really small percentage of the helmet value.

    Just my 2c.

went and got a newbie today. an AGV K3-SV. and all i can say is compared to the old helmet, this is amazing!!!! i tried on quite a few helmets today and although i did like the feel of the Shoei, the agv was that little more snug and it had the 1 thing i was after in a helmet, a sunvisor!!!!
