Maybe the mods could move these last few posts to a new thread; 'show us your dirt bike' or similar and give Aky141 back his thread.
This is my 1979 DS80. Bit of a old girl but still goes like the clappers. Got some HD shocks from Taiwan so I can ride her with the kids. Many hours of fun, pitty she's a bit loud without the muffler (fell off in a paddock somewhere apparently).
Bought this small wheel CR80 a while back for herself for a few hundy including all the gear she wanted to learn and i wanted to teach her to ride it.....little bit different now....main thing is it runs now. The bloke that owned it stacked it and smashed the kill switch, kept earthing so he through the bike was f*cked as he couldn't start, i got a new kill switch and hey presto..... so i tarted her up a bit, has a full sticker kit, new plastics and a few other bits. engine was sweet, carbs got a service and the things a bloody Antichrist i'll put up a pic of her now in the next day or two....i'll also try dig out any pics i may have of my old Derbi 80, KX125, YZ125 and the **** scary crazy machine.......the CR500, all from back in the day back in Ireland....
It's a nice bike Murdo but it will never have the street cred of your Maico. That is a very nice bike.
The Maico has just clocked 20,000Km now and 34years old. Had to replace and re-oil the forks a while back, and this week changed the seals and oil in rear shocks. Nothing lasts anymore. I change the gear oil every 1,000Km and clean the chain and air filter as required. I have run Bel-ray full synthetic two stroke oil at 55 to 1 ratio from new and have never taken the head off yet. I bought $1,000 of new parts in 1986 before the Aussie dollar was devalued by Keating, and so far have only used air filters and the carb to airbox rubbers. Am on my last German made Champion spark plug, so may have to do a bit of searching for more. I use Metzler enduro 6 ply tyres (used 5 rear and 3 front so far) with the flat sealing stuff in the tubes, and so far have never had a problem that I couldn't get home on. Have had five Maico's over the years, '72 'square barrel' 250, '71 'square barrel' 4 speed 400, '76 AW250, '77 GS250 and this one "81 GS250e. Wish I still had them all.
Yep they are off road vintage gold just about every one of them. I wouldn't mind a ride on one of those newer 700cc monsters as well! 55:1. Wow. My NSR runs at 30:1 and my KTM even now only at 60:1. The center stand is great too. I had an LC4 620 a few years back and I had the center stand option. Was very handy.
