Hey Guys, just wondering if anyone can help... My Suzuki Across is blowing lots of smoke! Mostly white smoke but I think I saw some blue smoke also. It starts and runs perfectly. Anyone have any idea what could be wrong? Thanks in advance

    Hey Macca

There are a few possibilities, white smoke may be a sign of coolant entering the cylinders, the cause being a blown head gasket, how are the temps when you ride it? Wait for it to cool right down and check your radiator / coolant overflow bottle, is the coolant full or have you lost some along the way ? Another possibility could be the water pump seal letting go, this allows the oil and coolant to mix, you could check this by looking at our oil and seeing if its discolored, finally, Valve stem seals are going \ gone.

Any other symptoms ? How many KM's

    Cheers

    Chris

^^^ what kiffsta said. Hi macca, white smoke usually points to water, is your bike using coolant? If so could be a blown head gasket.

Hey guys, thanks for the reply. To give you the whole story.... The last time I rode the bike was 3 yrs ago when it ran perfectly. It has been sitting in the garage ever since. I dragged it out for the first time yesterday, put a new battery in, made sure all the levels were ok, topped it up with some fresh fuel and ran it on the spot for a while and it blew heaps of smoke. I played around with again today, let it warm a bit and took for a short squirt up the road and still blowing heaps of smoke.
I understand that needs an oil change but it should still run without blowing smoke after sitting in the garage yeah? It would still have some stale fuel in it.
The overflow bottle is at the low level marker. Not sure if it's using water at this stage.
There are no other symptoms. Apart from the smoke it starts and sounds ok. But like I said, I haven't ridden it properly.
    Cheers

    Hey Macca,

Did you drain the old fuel out first ? if she has been sitting for 3 years the old fuel would have gone off and I reckon there would be plenty of condensation in there as well, if you just topped it up with old fuel already in there then that would be why you are smoking like a treasurer.

Just drain it all out, change the oil and add some fresh fuel..... you might be surprised that's all she needs.. gotta love the Across !!!

Also if she has been sitting that long, I would check your brake fluid and replace it, also check your tyre side walls for cracks... the rubber gets brittle if its been sitting for long periods

    Hey Chris,

No I didn't drain the old fuel out first. There wasn't much in there so I thought mixing it with fresh fuel would be ok. I will drain it all out and change the oil over the next day or so and see how she goes.

Surprisingly the tyres look pretty good. I have moved the bike a few times and topped up the pressures over the years.

Anyway thanks for your help. Hopefully in a couple of days I can let you know how I went.

    Much appreciated.

    Shaun

Maybe some metho in the tank to clear any condensation. Also some fuel cleaner/conditioner may be useful to run through the carbs.
Good to see you getting the bike back on the road.

Awesome thanks guys. I feel a bit more confident about getting her going now. I brought some fresh fuel home today and I'll get some fuel additive tomorrow then hopefully get a chance to drain it tomorrow night. I'll keep ya's posted.

Hey Guys, I drained all of the old fuel and put fresh fuel in, changed the oil and gave it a good run, but the bloody thing is still blowing smoke. It's doing my head in. It doesn't make sense because before it got stowed away in the garage there was nothing wrong with it!!

Could it be old oil/petrol in the muffler. It needs at least 1/2hour on highway to burn clean.
