hi guys - just bought a 89 3ln - great bike - sounds like a f1 car lol but one problem im having with it..when its started up it blows a bit of oil smoke (blue and smells like oil) it does it untill it gets hot... once its hot it doesnt seem to do it at all... if you let it sit even for an hour or so its ok..but after sitting overnight its back.. when its running it goes great - pulls clean and strong up to 19 grand so what could it be? rings? valve stemseals? cheers - lucas

Valve stem seals are always my first guess with these symptoms.

    No smoke when accellerating?

Put it down to bad seals in the valve stems. Not really a big issue but not easy to fix. When the bike smokes under load/hard acceleration is a sign of worn rings, not so good.

ok well at one level thats good to know ... a bit of ectra oil is annoying but at least its not gonna do much harm. can the seals be done with the head still on ? or is it a head off procedure? Also does anyone know of a seller for 'new' h bars? the bar that the instrument binnacle goes onto and the front fairing and screen atach to? mines a bit bent

Theoretically it would be possible to change the seals while the head is on the engine. But it would be a bit of a chore. Camshafts removed, valve cups removed (don't mix them up) springs removed, air pressure applied thru the spark plug hole to stop the valves falling in the cylinder.. Only do one cyl at a time as it has to be on TDC compression stroke.

I would not recommend it if you don't know what your doing..
