    Hi,

I've a spada that I am getting hard to start. It cranks just fine, plenty of spark, is getting juice (I think) because I've loosened the overflow screws on the carbs and i got juice. I turn the ignition with on, both use and don't use the choke and when I press the starter button it cranks fine, once I pull back on the throttle it clunks or Schhitumphs.

I've checked the valve clearances, all good. I took the carbs off and checked them, all good. the schitumph sound can lead to a backfire but that's only happened once, it sounds like it wants to backfire but it doesn't.

CAn anybody help. Plugs are new, electrics seem fine, head compression are both at 190ish. I can post a video on Youtube if it helps because then you can hear the sound. Well can you help?

    Can you punk?

I have had a Spada and it would kick over cold with a small amount of choke ( no throttle was needed), if it was hard to start, I would be checking the valve clearances, carbs ( making sure pilot jets are clear), and a do compression test, but you have done all that. Was the compression test done when the engine was warm or cold ?

I would move onto the following :

    • check the rubber boots that fix the carbs to the head for cracks ( letting in extra air)
    • check all wiring connections on the harness are clean and properly attached
    • do a coil check - http://www.ngk.de/en/technology-in-detail/ignition-coils/maintenance/diagnosis/
    • Look at doing a leak down test...
    • remove the Spada tank and use a hobby tank to provide fuel to carbs to rule out a faulty Petcock \ vacuum issue

that's all I can think of, good luck with it
