Hey guys.. was wondering if anyone could please give me some advice ??

I've got a 2010 Megelli 250R and its done just over 2000k's.. Haven't had any starting problems till recently.. Personally I'm still learning to ride and only get a chance to practice about once a week.

I was able to get it started ok with the choke on and out of no where I hear it still trying to 'kick' over .. as in the starter motor or something is still trying to turn on despite it already running?  I used the kill switch to turn the engine off and it was still trying to kick over! Then I took the key out and it was STILL trying to kick over!  It was like it was possessed!  ???
I could hear the kicking over weaken eventually.. which was the battery getting drained.. Also could smell  a strong sense of fuel. After a few more seconds it all eventually stopped.
I was able to finally locate the battery after pulling half the bike apart and when I did it was extremely hot.  I then tried to charge it with my charger and after being impatient cause it was taking forever I put it back in and gave it a push start.
I was able to get it going again and rode it for 10 mins and had no extra kicking over issues.  I then removed the battery agan to continue to charge it fully with the charger as I wasn't sure if i rode it enough to get it charged. After having the battery on the charger overnight it still didn't fully charge and found out it was pretty much dead (had a reading of 5 on the battery tester)
Today I got a new battery but am worried if I install it that I will have the same kicking over issues and kill the new battery?  Was thinking could it be that my starter switch is faulty and a bit sticky?

Anyone else experience something similar? any idea's and/or advice?  :-\

Sounds like the starter motor solenoid has stuck if you had the key out that should have stopped it if it was a switch. Is the bike still under warranty?

If it dose happen again you need to disconnect the active off the battery or the solenoid or at least give it a good hit to unstuck it.

I once set a car on fire by driving it with the starter motor still engaged so riding with it in that condition could end badly.

hey Phil, Im with you on the warranty front and the starter solenoid...  Troy, definately recommend getting back to the dealer, if you turned the key, that should have killed power to the the bike.

The starter solenoid contacts to the starter motor will come directly from the battery not through the ignition due to the high current draw of the motor. that's why turning the switch off didn't stop the starter motor.

agreed, should have say that turning the key should have killed the circut to engage the starter , if the solenoid is stuck open then the starter will contnue to crank.

I did google it and there are few Megelli's that have had this problem.

Cheers guys for the responses!  Much appreciated and have learned a lot!

Unfortunately its no longer under warranty, so thats pointless but however I will try contact the dealer.

I'm still tempted tho to pop the new battery in & give it a go & see if it was just a one off problem? Cause when I had it push started, the clicking over sounds were no longer there? And if it is, I'll try do as advised and give it a good hit.. Is this thought worth the try? or a totally bad idea?

oh btw where is the starter motor solenoid located to give it that hit and how do i disconnect the active off the battery? Is it by removing the points of the battery (negative first then positive, right?)
I'm totally all new to this, apologies for the ignorant questions..

If it is out of warranty it could be worth droping into an auto electrical shop as they may be able to recondition the solenoid. It may just need to be pulled apart and cleaning. Putting the battery back in should be safe as running one flat and recharging it should not do too much harm. but doing it too often will stuff it after a while.

I am not sure on your bike but mine is a naked bike so it is easy to get to at the front of the motor.

If I get a chance i will have a look at one to see where the starter is.

Thanks again for all the advice.. really, really appreciate it mate

I've replaced the battery and started her up and all works normally again!!
No extra kicking over sounds and started the first go.. took it for a ride and was all good! Fingers crossed it stays that way!

    Cheers
