recently purchased second hand 1995 across. it was running when we test drove it, but noticed the revs sticking, not the accelerator cable

drove it back home, approx 150 kms, no problems and had a few lessons on it, no major problems other than the revs sticking

thought the sticking may be due to lack of use, used some wd40...

after lesson the other day heard a clicking sound which turned out to be the petrol pump priming.. which we hadn't heard previously, then it wouldn't start at all

long story short, ended up checking the battery, replacing the spark plugs, cleaning the carby, putting in a bottle of carby cleaner, new top quality petrol, new petrol filter.. still wont start at all except when push started... but now it revvs uncontrollably when in neutral

when cleaning the carby didn't fiddle with fuel mix, but noticed the gaskets on the air intake box were torn, could this be causing the high revving out?

the stop idle is set low too

    any ideas/thoughts appreciated

I think your going to have to pull the carbies off again & go through it all carefully & see what is sticking open, maybe a slide is jamming open a bit, maybe a bit worn or there's something not fitted properly.
Doesn't sound like a fuel delivery or sucking air issue but a mechanical problem, (in the carbies not engine)
Keep posting & you'll get it fixed with everyone's help.
Have a look at the plugs & see if one is blacker than the rest & check that carby first.

Hmm. Are you sure the clicking noise was the fuel pump and not the starter motor? If it starts off a push but not off the key there could be your issue. Otherwise I'd start to be concerned about compression. The sticky revs could be a few different things but most likely carbies, fuel/air mix blocked/narrowed jets etc. All relatively straightforward to investigate but you need to pull the carbies off.

I'd be looking more closely at the starter motor, not sure how these bikes are but on a previous bike it connected through the back of the stator cover and into a gear. If that gear was flogged out you could be skipping teeth (ie clicking)... stator cover doesn't have any oil behind it so easy enough to check.

let us know how you go.

hey ! sorry for the delay responding. Been riding the across.! After pulling it apart again I noticed the throttle elbow and throttle cable was lose. I tightened them but it pulled the the stop idle up reving the hell out of it. I also discovered when I turned the handle bars the revs would change. Traced the problem to the throttle linkage .
I nearly had to remove the carbies again.
To fix the problem I found an extra washer that appeared after putting the fairing back on , sliced a cut in it with a hacksaw so it would fit around the throttle cable.
Then tightened the lock nut over the top of it .
This took the pressure off the stop idle and held the elbow in place so it wouldnt get affected by the handle bars.
Sorry if my explination is'nt very clear, but problem fixed . Thanks for your help . Ride on.
