Ok so I have a Suzuki Across that I want to get back into working order. The last time I rode it the electrical system started playing up big time. The blinkers turn on but they do not blink and the engine was running smoothly but sometimes when the bike was warming up the power would cut out. Not just the engine dying as if the engine were just cold, I mean the engine would stop firing and the lights would go off as if someone threw a big "OFF" switch in the bikes electrical supply. Also the dashboard lights would flicker on/off sometimes. When I used the bike last I got quoted a huge sum of money to fix this problem, more than the bike is worth. How should I go about fixing this?
I would initially examine the wiring harness for rusty, corroded, dodgy connections .... and also for any broken, exposed or damaged wires/areas that may be causing shorts. Take off the seating, tank and wateva so u can get to and follow all the wiring to its destination. Start by removing the battery ( so theres no sparks flying while u check connections ) and work your way from the battery leads ..... make sure the - is going to earth correctly and follow the + to the starter soleniod etc. Is the battery fairly new ? and fully charged? Once you know everything is connected correctly then if theres still a problem it will be time to see what important components need looking at ..... voltage regulator, CDI etc The other thing u can do is disconnect minor things like blinkers , lights etc to see if that helps to isolate the problem Be careful u dont disable wateva safety switches are on the Across ...otherwise it wont start. Theres an Across wiring diagram in the Resources section.
im no electrician but i would first check the connections to the battery and work my way down the wires till i get to other connections to see if there is any corrosion on the pins inside. spray some wd40 or inox on those connections. check for loose wires/broken wires. as for the indicators not flashing not sure. greyimport says it better
The across is usually pretty good electrically, I agree with both Andrew and Grey Imports comments. I would have a good look at the voltage regulator , While checking the battery with a multi-meter give the engine a rev.. it should show that the battery is charging with at least 13.5 V, if not the regulator is cactus. if that's okay, then I would look at the stator, if you download the workshop manual in the resources section, there are some tests that you can do to try and determine what the issue is. Chris
Wow this is all a huge help. I think I will start with the basic stuff of just looking at the wiring to see if I can get away with an easy fix, corrosion, pins, etc. If not I'll have to bone up on some of those work shop manuals...
Think you have been given all the correct info, no need to add my 2 bits worth. My mechanic told me that at least 80 to 90% of electrical issues on motorcycles are related to dirty/poor/broken connections. Seems like thats where I would focus my attention first. If that pans out, then look at the components. Keep us posted on your progress!
