Hey all I was putting the cam chain back in and was gonna rotate it to make sure it was on properly so I rotated it and the intake side come off d the exhaust side rotated a bit so now they're out if synch how do I get them back together? If all that makes sense cheers
So after playing around with it all night the cams don't seem to wanna go back in when they're at the timing points with ex and intake, they don't sit down properly, anyone have any advice on what to do
It sounds like you might be 180degrees out on the cams. The crank rotates 2x for every cam revolution (i.e. Compression and exhaust cycle) so you may be on exhaust phase.
Also it when I had the crankshaft at TDC when I sat the camshaft where it felt it would sit properly the intake line on the camshaft was facing up
Hang in there, I'll see if I can get dad to have a read & give you some directions. He's busy today working on an old triumph for a friend.
Thanks heaps mate, first time doing this sorta stuff for me but I wanted to give it a crack, only way to learn
it sounds like you cranked it without the tensioner in so pull the cam out and start again keep engine at tdc 1&4, put on the exhaust cam first and wrap the chain around it so it is tight, put intake cam on so timing marks are all good and just make sure the timing marks are all lined up, dont rotate it without the tensioner in it. as you put the cam holder on it will move the cams that little bit into place and create more tension on the chain and pull the cams back a little, so even if the markings are out by a touch once its all back together and there is tension on the chain it will work itself out. which is why you should hand crank it abit after doing this.
that looks corrrect, turn it over with the tensioner in afew times and if the timing is still good then you should be good to go, check your valve clearances again before putting it all back together.
