I bought myself an '88 fzr250 2kr exup last week, and I think I should give it a once over. Oil filter, I hear this is very tricky to get at, I've read a similar thread so I'll give it a shot this weekend. But I must say I am a COMPLETE noob when it comes to mechanics. So my question is where is airfilter and how do i remove it to clean it. I hear there is also a petrol filter that needs cleaning?

Congrats on the purchase, and welcome to the forums! You won't be dissapointed.

Oil filter - as you have likely already read it is under the exhaust. So you will need to unbolt the exhaust, and possibly unhook the exup valve - these will be the cables attached the exhaust beside/under the side stand (though you don't necessarily need to, and you may not actually have one). When you unbolt the filter the leftover oil that did not drain will come out so make sure you have paper/oil tray under there (and if the oil is warm don't get any on you cuz it burns easily)

Airfilter - the tank is actually a tank cover. To get at it you will need to take off the seats and side fairings. Screws are located at the base of the tanks (where your crotch usually would be - easiest way to explain it...), and then there are some underneath the air intake tubes (you can push these out of the way, not necessary to remove completely). I actually forget if you have to take off the fuel cover and the associated screws (sorry!!!). When that is done the tank cover will slide off revealing the cover for the air filter (fly nut), as well as the actual tank.

Fuel filter - take off the left hand fairing and look inside. You will see a tupe running from the fuel pump (small cylinder thing with a tube out the far side), which then enters the carbies. If you have an inline filter (not all do) it will be here. Turn off the fuel tap and remove.

As for the noobie questions - don't worry!!! If you don't ask you will never learn. I didn't have a clue about bikes when I first bought mine, and I learned from more experienced bikers. I now find myself in the position to help out with the relative basic maintenance and some troubleshooting, but nothing 'advanced' as such. I am still learning a lot!!!!!

If you have any other questions please ask. (oh - and don't forget to get a new oil filter and replacement oil BEFORE you start - the first time I forgot to do this and ended up catching a bus to get oil and filter rather than riding to get these things... I was a bit too anxious to get started)
