uni + bike

whats the go with living at a uni campus and having somewhere to keep the bike? i asked while i was there the other day and didn't get any real answer other than 'cant help ya'. anyone know from experience? im guessing im gonna have to find a relo somehwere close..

The uni is a 6 hour drive from home, a bit far to drive everytime i get the urge to ride..

 

where do the students keep their cars?? wouldn't that be the logical place to keep your bike??

 

all the car parks are out in the open. i was just looking for some kinda idea i might have missed. should be right

If your forced to park out on the street there's a few things that'll help keep your bike where you left it and it should cost you under $200.
1. Disc lock - they're about $20 and will stop someone moving your bike more than about a metre. Also the Xena ones come with an alarm inbuilt for ~$60-80.
2. Alarm - Jaycar sells one for $50-80; get it and fit it. It's loud, its annoying, and it'll give you enough time to grab a cricket bad and get down there in your boxers in the middle of the night. I did a bulk buy of them a little while ago ('bout a year ago now) and got them for $50 a piece. RRP is ~$79.
3. Bike cover - ($30 @ Kmart/BigW up to $70 for a nice one with lining) simply covering it up along with the other two aforementioned devices does wonders for deterring most theives. When they remove the cover, generally the alarm will go off.
4. Tie down point/bronx chain - ($70-180) big thick security chain with tie down point bolted into the ground... or a big pole/tree. I tend to just chain it to the rear wheel, but if you can wrap it around the frame. After all, wheels can be removed fairly quickly.

If your doing it on the cheap i'd get one of those Xena disc lock alarms and a bike cover. Should get a little change from $100.

I've got a disk lock that ive been using for a while now. There's no alarm on it though, so i'll get the rest before the bike moves in. Aswell as a baseball bat...

I've got an old Easton baseball bat that has been dubbed 'Mr Shiny'. Serves perfectly for a bit of ad-hoc home defense should the need arise. (Thankfully it hasn't, but its nice to have it there).
