Im at a loss as what i should do with my bike.

I love the bike. Im attached to it but its falling apart underneath me. I really want to restore it. But the cost and time involved is alot to deal with.

I've been thinking about modification rather than restoration and this raises more interest to me but stuffing around might get a bit much. This is my prefered option.

another option is to ride it into ground and just fix the bare minimum.

the engine/clutch/starter clutch/gearbox could be all sorted with a new engine from the breakers, seat can easily be recovered, maybe some fresh oil and seals in your forks might stiffen them up. its the electrics id be most worried about

Easy fix... $120 to $150 parts and labor
Try thicker oil or even oil addetives
same as above if the engine in not too much out of wack... other wise a good sevice (valve clearences, cam chain addust)
There is a trick to them... use washers don't wast money on new plates
Hmm I have had thesame problem for the past 5 years....
Ok can be expensive to fix or replace... if you want it look original!! I can plastic weld tham up and soon I'll have some fiberglass for sale...
You have no idea how cheep and how easy it is to fix...
ok this could be fun to fix... but than you can get a second hand wiring loome for $100 to $200
some fresh oil would help there too...

It sounds like the previous owner used car oil in the bike (Crunchy Gbox, noisy engine, smoke)

My opinion would be to modify it to a streetfighter look or run it into the ground - doing only what needs to be done to keep it on the road (see next paragraph). If you try to rebuild it back to original then you are probably looking almost at same cost as buying another second hand fzr (people on this site selling them for about $2000 - may not be pristine but they are in decent condition).

Running into ground option: How long do you have left on your restrictions? I think about another 10 months if I recall. If your bike can last 10 months without causing safety concerns (i.e. provided you can continue to run it safely for both you and those around you) then I think this is the best option. After 10 months you can upgrade - and you can probably buy a 600 for about the same cost as a newer (near pristine) fzr250. Save your money and buy the bike you really want. If, the fzr250 is the bike you really want then disregard this advice.

yeah I agree with Boz... just do the bare minimum to keep it on road... put some fresh oil in the forks, change oil the engine, plastic weld the farings but don't bother painting em or use a can...

I am for running it into the ground too. When you start thinking about restoration you might as well set your wallet on fire. You are never going to get your money back and will have to wait longer to buy the bike of your dreams.

As TBone says, it only 'really' needs some fresh oil bit of welding and a can of spray paint to make it livable.

i jst bought my 3ln 2 onths ago for €1850 and only this week i forked out another €1280 on repairs. while its great to have her back and running perfect, it is not pleasent havin to hand over that kinda money on a 12 yr old bike

hey liamo, howza bike running?
Anyway, my "advice" with the 250 is just to get out there and ride the thing, don't stress too much on how it looks and whether you're gonna get your money back at sell time - just keep it choofing along and use the year to gain some experience. Chances are you will come off and scuff the thing up a bit at some stage (i know you have done this sobil, as have i and many others) and we probably should have bought crapper bikes without fairings to learn on but the main thing is just to be out on the road and having a bit of fun - which the fizzer is great for.
I held on to the idea of keeping my bike in pristine condition and selling it for more than i paid, but after tripping over a bit of road and ruining that idea i'm just resigned to keeping it running and in decent mechanical condition.

yep run it into the ground and keep saving....... on your l's and p' its very lucky if ypu dont put it down or drop it once or twice.... as i learned last week after only having my bike for about a month (couldnt see gravel around a corner)
as i had a great new blue spray on the bike when i bought it, now one whole side is now demolished....

Easy fix?? (just an oil change in the front?) or the full reco job?? eather way no problems... I can even take a look at your rear (thoug for the shock reco you need a specialist if it is a gas type)
