When I was researching different bikes on the net I read through all the forums looking for information on different bikes. Most 500s and 650 lams bikes were overpriced for what they are and with the lams market how it is more learners are going for the bigger bikes. Which leaves a lot of good 250s to be had for a bargin. Most of the other forums talk of 250s as good learning bike but you will be glad to trade up when your on your unrestricted license! Personally I think 250s are underrated and we live in world (country) where bigger is considered to be better. Most young people starting out spend the first 3 years wanting more power, hating their bike and not getting the most enjoyment out of it.
Don't get me wrong if the type of ridding I intend to do is long distance touring two up with heaps of luggage a bigger bike would be better suited. But riding for me now is all about just getting on the bike heading out to one of many winding back roads around my place and having fun! I don't need to break the law (much) to achieve that on my 250.
So my question is what draws you to a 250?

Sex appeal mate. Pure sex appeal. 2fiddy rolls off the tongue like sweet sweet nothings in the moonlight. You tell a girl you ride a 2fiddy & that's an ace in the hole

    Hey Tom
Go to India and have a look around, the 250 is considered a big bike there. For me I really feel like I can ride a 250, not as in ability, as my good friends at Queensland transport say I can ride any size as I have my open license, but more ride them in the sense that I can open the throttle all the way through the gears as they designed to be ridden. I once rode my Dad's CBR1100 Super Blackbird from Brisbane to the Sunny Coast, Im cruising along and come up behind a car that was doing 100 in a 110 zone, force of habit, I dropped her down a gear, indicated, moved right and opened her up.... now I shot past that car like it was standing still. For some that's the obvious thrill and to be honest I was smiling all the way, but for me, when I ride a bigger bike I feel I have to constantly hold back or I will loose my license. I'm not saying I haven't been booked on a 250, but the thrill of a 2 stoke (NSR250, Aprilia RS250) or an inline 4 like an Across, FXR250, CBR250, ZXR250 going through the gears gives me a rush, they are light, handle incredibly well and the exhaust note at high revs... is music to my ears.
I think the other reason I like them is almost all riders have one or owned one before stepping up and are almost always willing to chat about them, a lot of riders I talk to wish they kept their 250. The new crop of LAMS bikes are great, so much technology packed in there... I have ridden a few, but again they don't get me excited like the bikes I talked about above. I also own a VFR400, its similar as it has 59 horses, but I love riding it, hearing that v4 revving over 14000 rpms is awesome, if I did that on my old ZXR750 or Dads CBR1100 in any other gear than 1st, I would be making a hefty donation to Johnny Law.
I do find myself looking at the Kawasaki W800 or Triumph Bonny and think they would be cool to own, maybe one day I will, a bit heavier than I would like, but the power is 70 or 60 horses respectively so they can be ridden.

    Cheers

Having just bought a 600cc super sports bike I couldn't have said it better myself. Get a good 250cc working and enjoy riding it properly and legally on the road. I sure won't be selling my ZXR250 for this single reason alone.
