Thanks Jo.. yes... I was planning on a full engine strip anyway... I like the idea of a 466 big bore kit and a little head porting as well A lot of the noise in the video is actually exhaust noise from the hole in number 2 pipe... as is the slight backfire you might hear on dropping revs.
I did some of these engines in my "younger years", and the only thing not so good with these bikes is the camchain tensioner, the big bore kit will make it even more lively, they're really very nice bikes even for riding two-up
The Delkeic 4 into 1 Stainless header's look alright for the CB400F, $237US http://4into1.com/delkevic-4into1-stainless-steel-headers-honda-cb400f/ https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Honda-C...062433&hash=item2cb3b1c4d8:g:lqIAAOSw0wRaFGsS
Spent some time cleaning up the X7 I am doing up, new piston and rings came on Friday so I have to get a move on and do some scrubbing, found a little steam cleaner in the back of the shed and it works a treat.
It is hard to tell in the video but around the bike there is actually very little mechanical noise... and none from around the primary chain area... doesnt mean there isnt any play there though.. I am just very happy with the way it starts so easily after banging my head against a brick wall with the Across...lol As much as I really wanted to do a "Resto" job on the bike I can see aftermarket headers going on... and not Resto ones, they simply want to many $$$ for them. David Silver Spares has them for A$575 (converted) plus freight... and apparently they dont flow all that well either...lol Still its a long way off needing them so I have plenty of time to figure it out.
They are really nice and are available out of Qld with either a Cafe type muffler or a megaphone with removable baffle and core for about the same price as the David Silver headers. Trying to find video’s to hear the note they make is a bit hard though. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Pro

Today I broke the choke cable putting the carbies back into the spada After only getting them back because last week broke the joining piece on the fuel intake taking them out Words to the wise don’t let the bike site in the shed for a year while you do the house Reno’s
I was meant to be cleaning the shed, but I thought maybe I could get the red Across going. But after the fuel leaking everywhere and the brakes sticking a bit, I decided to put it on a raised workbench. But my 2 workbenches were in use, so I had to make another one! That took a couple of afternoons a morning (now sporting some welding radiation burns), and finally got the bike up. Ironically, I was suffering a sore back building the workbench that is to prevent a sore back while working on motorcycles.. Cleaned up brake pistons and started on the carbies. But I noticed it needs 2 new tyres, too. I better flush the rear brakes and make sure they work properly.
Having an aftermarket 4 into 1 (or similar period pipe) is quite acceptable on a restored bike so long as its not been cut up into some bobber/cafe crap.
I took my bike for a ride! ....then after a stop at the local foursquare, the battery was dead.. roll started it, rode it home and pulled the stator cover off to find the magnets were falling to bits.. cleaned the debris up then re-assembled the cover to find the starter motor won't spin now. woohooo!
Today I registered the zzr600, ready for the weekend! Shame the forecast is rainy. In other news... Wednesday is my midweek day off for R.I. and getting stuff done, so the zzr600 went fora roadworthy in the morning, then, after a meeting, I set about getting an Across sorted. Now, the red had some work done to get it ready, but the tyres are perished a bit, cracks about them. So, I thought I'll get the white one ready and swap the tyres later, because I don't value my life enough to not use such tyre - slippery in the wet! But the carbies needed doing (I thought there was a blockage from the tank, no fuel was being pumped, but it finally pumped fuel when I turned the fuel tap on!), as the right side leaked. Carbies swap. I had the other set out for cleaning, so just swap them. It fired up, ran, blew smoke, stopped running (wouldn't hold idle) and fuel overflowed from the right carby, even though it is the other set! Ran out of time, the brakes needed doing, too. And he front brake switch is not working, along with fuel and boot openers. We'll worry about another day. I did think about the zx2r, but I wanted keep it, so the selling bikes are prioritised at the moment. I did get the fork seals done, finally!
Well it took all day to rebuild the zxr carbies, put them on the bike, checked the float levels (against nothing... Just guessing) and fired up the engine. Took a bit to start, blew smoke, revved, but then it was not running too well. And it seemed get worse. No airbox might affect it, not valve clearances haven't been checked, can chain tensioner hasn't been checked, been sitting a while, so rings and bore could be ordinary, too. So, do I just put it together and so be it, or pull it down and check plugs, valves, etc.? So much for Southern Downs round 1 on Feb 9/10.. Also, registered the zzr600 on Thursday, rode it yesterday and was not impressed with the handling. It was heavy felt like it had flat tyres. So I pumped up the tyres and it got better!
Get the carbs right, check the valve clearances and plugs and give it a good ride to clear the cylinders.
