Fellow riders. Does anyone know of mechanics that would be willing to work on a ZXR 250 in Sydney? There are just some things I cannot do myself due to no experience and lack of knowledge/tools/workshop... Most mechanics ive spoken to even the guys that work on cbr250rr's are petrified of ZXR's lol. Not entirely sure yet. My father in law mechanic is going to open her up with me next week to have a proper geeze around but I have a feeling it either needs valve work or has a vacuum leak. Overall it just needs a decent service but carb/valve work i dont have the skills or tools to do myself. I don't understand why mechanics don't want to work on older stuff in general. Carbies and air/fuel through the intake valve and exhausts with no cats or collectors are infinitely easier to work on, compared to servicing your more modern stuff with all the emissions BS plastered onto them
I get the same response wven from the odd mechanic that will work in a cbr250rr.. Along the line of "too much time. Once you fix something another thing goes wrong. Working on an old bike is just not what lots of mechanics want to do. It's a nightmare for them, parts, age, flogged etc. as mentioned it's just way easier to do work on other/newer bikes. I use to think exactly the same. It takes a little bit of time but it's not really that hard. I had no knowledge of carbs, vacuums and valves before I tried fiddling with it. Glad I did because it's actually not that hard and learnt so much! I went through exactly the same process as you. I took a bike to a mechanic, I'm still finding things that said mechanic stuffed up attempting to fix it and only ended up getting the bike working properly after I put lots of hours into it myself. If you want tell us exactly what the bike is doing that's giving you trouble I'm sure we can either help guide you through the process or at least give you some info to tell your mechanic
You do have a point but I really dont come from a mechanical background. I prefer to spend more time riding then fixing it. I look after my cars/bikes quite well but obviously it doesnt mean the previous owner has haha. A quick rundown of whats going on... 1) Bike hangs at around 3-4k rpm when revved. Not every single time but a majority of the times. 2) after riding for a while if i turn it off/stall it it wont start back up. Have to wait around 5 mins then it fires back up. The first 2 problems only started developing a couple weeks after i bought it. It needs some other general stuff done but waiting to see if the problems around the engine are fixable first before using time and money on the others Sent from my SM-G900I using Tapatalk
Also on the second point aswell. Once after riding for a while i got to a set of lights and the motor just shut down when i stopped. Waited 5 mins on the footpath and ot fired back up. Sent from my SM-G900I using Tapatalk
Sounds like you have an air leak in your carbs \ airbox, If it wont start up after running for a while, try some choke and see if that will help it start ?
lexluthor sounds like a vacuum leak, might be as simple as 5 dollars worth of hoses from supercheap. if your still not keen on doing it go to a mechanic and tell them it has a vacuum leak somewhere.
The choke trick doesnt work :/ Me and my father in law mechanic also think it may be a vacuum leak. Told this info to one of the mechanics willing to work on my bike (wont mention names) yet he was adamant it was valve work without even going outside and having a look at my bike at all. He quoted me near 1 grand. I think he thought I was a 17 yr old p plater so i left that place right away. Next week sometime my father in law is going to have a look with me, see if he can do it himself first before i leave it at a mechanic. Ohhhhh ZXR's are not good for this . It's all worth it though Yep as others have said Vaccum leak The ZXR manual has in the general chapter a pipe routeing diagram that shows where they should all go. New pipes from super cheap will do trick. It's bogging down at such a low RPM I bet one of the pipe has just come loose, snapped or broken off. Had the exact same problem with my one, just worked around it. Later on I put a new battery in and it has been fine ever since. Doubt it.
Thanks for the input guys. This problem worries me because its shut down at some bad spots (eg. At the lights on a main road in traffic) so it can be dangerous. Ill keep the thread posted with what eventuates with this. Cool. Well once you sort out the 3-4k RPM bog down if it still has the doesn't start up issue then you could consider the valves. Perhaps they get too tight/loose when they heat up.
Most likely too tight as the valve seats recess over time. Changing the shims is the only fix. Happened to one of the fizzers. Was running, and then not. No start. Cold on cylinder 3 header.

Well with the fizzer, we had no signs of a vacuum leak or revs hanging. Infact you could roll start it and open throttle, it would bog down and die. Cylinder 3 header would stay cold the whole time. Vacuum leak is definitely revs hanging/not dropping to idle, or the idle circuit is too lean.
