Valve clearances are easy to check. You need feeler gauges. You have to remove the rocker cover and use the gauges to check the clearance between the camshaft lobe and the valve. You'll need to refer to the service manual for the valve specs. What happens is that the valve seats (they seal compression gasses) wear and start recessing. This causes the valve clearance to become tight. Which in turn means the valve is open longer, doesn't cool down as much (critical for exhaust valves) which can eventually burn them or crack them. As for clutch/roll starting... it's easy if you have a slightly downhill road. Sit on the bike, start rolling in neutral, clutch in. Once you have some speed, pop into 1st or 2nd (2nd is easier), let the clutch out, give it a bit of throttle. If it fires, keep the throttle on and pull in the clutch.
Yes i have a can of that, but a bit pointless to use it if the airbox and carbies aren't attached. Yes it is very frustrating, i have packed it up for today and will try again tomorrow
Is there any sign of fuel spitting back out of the carbs when you crank it? If so, this is a sign of inlet valves too tight (not enough clearance) and will need to be adjusted.
if the airbox is off, I would whip the carbs off and pull the slow jets out and make sure they are clean, you can also try and cover the inlets to the carbs with a rag to richen the air fuel mix
I will pull the airbox right out tomorrow, and put the rubber boots in hot water so i can fit them back on the carbys. It is great of fuel, but i will check the jets while i am at it
All good. have to dismantle the back end of the bike to remove the airbox, and ended up removing the carbs as well. But after all that the bike is running well just need to adjust the idle. I took it for a run around newcastle city, it runs better then it did before, so i am really happy now. All the advice was great appreciated
I know exactly how you feel, I've been off the road for nearly 3 months...not bike related at all. My leg operation has been sorted at long last and boy am I ready to hit the road.
