I have a castec framed MC20 and it carries a plate (presumably attached when the bike was imported) with a 1991 date and a VIN JH2MC20U8LM000193. This is different from my other Spada, because on its plate it gives the manufacturing date and the date of importation. The 10th VIN character is the date of manufacture and M is 1991 but this cannot be right if Spadas ceased being built at the end of 1989. Somehow this importation date has become the bike's build date and the RTA will not allow registration as a 30 year old classic. I've looked at HONDA VIn check sites but they are only for cars. Where can I find evidence that this bike is an 89 model. It has 000193 stamped on the headstock which would confirm that it is an early Spada build bike. My other 89 Spada is 012687 (headstock)
Never trust advice you get from the RTA, although calling the RTA 13 77 88 (now called service NSW,) ask to be put thru to technical services is a good place to start
My Spada is a 1991 Australian delivered model... If the Vin plate is a Honda plate then it is a 1991 model. If the plate has an importers name on it then it is a Grey Import but would still be considered a 1991 model for Registration purposes as that would have been the first time it was registered. When I get out to the garage later on today I will take a pic of my VIN plate so you can compare.
Be careful when searching for the Federal Govt PPSR (Personal Property Security Register) with a search engine. A number of sneaky"entrepreneurs",(con men/women) have set up private businesses and pay google to place their sites ahead of the official govt site. The govt site charges around $2 for your certificate that tells you if the vehicle is a stat write off or stolen . The private sites enter your details into the official govt site and charge between $20 to $50 for the privilege.
This is the link to the Govt site... as @Gizziracer says... $2 and it gives you peace of mind on a purchase or confirms the info you have already. https://transact.ppsr.gov.au/ppsr/S...si=6&wsi=9a8a8c0b-12a0-4d41-81c1-a581b7cc909e
OK, I stuffed up. I was looking at the 11th VIN digit and it is "M". The 10th digit is "L" so that is 1990. Adych - your bike is a 1990 model so can now be registered as a classic in NSW. The date of first registration is NOT material. The BUILD date is. My Spada has a build number 14 units earlier than yours. Your VIN plate numbering (bar the 9th digit and the last 3) is identical to mine. The 9th digit is different because it is a check number to ensure that no two vehicles get the same VIN number. The "M" means that these bikes were made in the Hamamatsu plant. So thanks for the stuff about PPSR. I will now talk to RTA tech services because I still have the problem of the rego papers showing it as a 1991 model whereas it was definitely built in 1990. (and the "L" proves it). I'll let you know what they say. To illustrate the point that the number on the VIN plate is not always the determining factor. On my Spada I bought from Rob (Gizziracer), the VIN on the frame plate, is 6MBHONDA2K2539274 (dated 10/03). So the K says it is an 89 model. The plate was correctly formulated (as regards build date) but how did the importer get the K bit right? When I went to club rego it, Grafton wouldn't approve it until I got them to understand that the K meant it must be an 89 bike. On the rego papers it shows the VIN as being MC 20102687 (same as the headstock number) so what's that all about? The headstock number is MC20102687. The rego papers now show the VIN no as MC20102687 and the model as 1989.
I think you will find that it is dependant on the VIN plate... as that is considered to be the build date of when it complies with Australian Certification, you can see mine clearly says 5/91 and is affixed by Honda Motor Corporation, so no.. it cant be registered as Historic until May 1991. Your previous one was a Grey Import and as such they would take the build date as apposed to the date imported. You could try to get yours through but if your VIN plate is the same as mine... I think you wont succeed. If you do... let me know and I will wait a few months
The historic rego only goes on the year not the month so yours Andy could be registered on January 1st next year.
Hi Guys, Interesting chat about Spada VIN numbers. I eould be interested to know if anyone has details of the total build numbers of Spadas. From what I have read so far, it appears that production only run from late 1988 to late 1989. Any thoughts/evidence to support build numbers? My Spada has a build number of MC20-1008465.
I did and it just looks like it's all parts !!!!!!!!!! I have been talking to a guy at the RMS who has been very helpful and said that if i sent him pics of the bike and the compliance plate and the headstock number, he would probably be able to facilitate registration as a 1990 bike. (cos its got an L as digit number 10) BUT he doesn't want me giving out his name until he's decided because doesn't want a whole bunch of guys jumping on him. Andych's bike is the same situation. Once he gives the OK and gives me something to take to the local RTA (or gets the records amended) I'll let you know . A vehicle inspector is coming up from coffs harbour on Tuesday and doing this area so I'll be getting a housecall, that afternoon. He says that this is not the same as this to quote his response "It is actually manufactured for the Australian market and has an Australian compliance plate attached. The other example you provided is a Japanese market motorcycle and was allocated with an Australian VIN and compliance plate in 2003." I don't think he's correct in stating that the "issue" bike was manufactured for the Australian market. It's a Japanese domestic one because it has an on/off headlight switch, Japanese characters on the master cylinders, and a 90kph warning light on the speedo face.
