also check your coils, which when defective can play up when they heat up but are ok when cold

After reading the events leading up to your stoppage, thought perhaps you check filters on the petcock as the bike was leaned over exiting a turn?? Not terribly difficult to check and if OK eliminates another issue. Feel certain you'll get this issue sorted soon.

All you've got to do is lane-split all the way through the coronation drive morning traffic at 100kph so you make it to work before your bike dies. If any officer pulls you over I'm sure they'll understand

Even though you have spark my money is still on a fouled or damaged spark plug. Have you changed them yet?

I agree based on what your saying that is proooobably not electrical, only thing is if it was fuel I think there would be other issues or signs that the fuel was the problem. It sounds like a very yes no issue, working or not working. So if the issue is that it was getting no fuel, having the petcock on reserve would be something to check.
If fuel is getting to the carbs then I would move on, in my mind it would run choppy if it was a carb issue or there would be other signs of problems I think.

Did you check both coils for strong spark when it wont start? If there is strong spark on all 4 leads when it wont start then its not electrical, which once again points back to the spark plugs lol.

Final concussion betcha its the spark plugs =p.

actually quite the contrary there were no other signs for me when my zxr had fuel starvation due to a not high flow enough fuel filter. It would be sweet as pie unless riding at 100+km/h for more then 10 mins then it would run out of fuel and die. no matter if on reserve/on or prime. I would then pull over and prime the carbs again and off i would go sweet as pie again (it was quite funny as i would stop in the same spot each morning on the way to work lol).

You have to remember that 4 I repeat FOUR carbs are being gravity fed. I repeat GRAVITY FED so any restriction in fuel flow at all can mean you will get fuel starvation.

The last thing i would look at before opening your carbs is your petcock, disconnect the tank and turn the tap to reserve see if it flows. keep the vacuum line attached to the tank and turn the tap to on and give the vacuum hose a little suck. If fuel flows quickly straight away the tap is fine.

also depending what fuel you ran and how long it sat in the carbs it could be turn to jelly in the floatbowls. (e10 gums up pretty quick) When you say you've had the carbs tuned does this mean cleaned? as they could be dirty.

Yeah but what I said was if petrol is getting to the carbs then move on. My point was a jet in one of the carbs clogging then un clogging over and over is probably not the problem and a big job compared to changing the spark plugs which should be done every full service anyway so hey good idea?

I was replying to the fact you said in your mind the bike would run choppy if it was fuel related I was just pointing out you can have a fuelling issue with no other signs present other then it dying and eventually starting again. However pulling the plugs out and swapping them is a good idea as you can read the plugs to help find the issue but if one is fouled or they are fouled that also points back to carbs ;)

A new set of plugs will always make you feel better at $2 each, cheap fix but plugs don't really foul on 4 strokes they might die & then you'll know because they don't come back from the dead. There could be a bit of crap bridging the gap sucked in from the inlet, maybe a dirty air filter or a perishing foam filter letting bits get sucked in at intermittent times.
Try putting a length of fuel line on the carby drain nipples & open the drain screw & catch it in a glass & see what comes out before you dismantle anything. If it's all clean then still don't rule out dirty carbs, but if it's crappy then you might have it. If all the crap does come out then take it for a ride & see if you get away with it. That's what they are there for apart from measuring fuel bowl height.

Just an FYI, sometimes the R/R can work fine and appear to be working (also test up fine) but might be stuffed. The older Honda units are prone to failure and have been replaced with a newer design. Tyga has them for $50 (cheapest I have ever found). A Honda dealer will charge over $200. Also, I've never really needed a fuel filter and only heard of problems. I knew someone with a Harley who had exactly the same problem as you, caused by a fuel filter. As for dirty carbs, my MC22 used to run fine with dirty as sin carbs but obviously not well and never had problems like you described. Nonetheless, maybe it would be wise to get some clear tubing and use it as a fuel line (doesn't matter if it's not fuel rated, it's just temporary) and go out for a ride. And then see if the line has fuel in it when your bike conks out. Take a socket set with you. Or better yet, plan a ride so you end up back at your house after 20min so it dies in your driveway and you can check everything. The regulators get super hot so I wouldn't exactly rule it out, especially if it's the older design. Your coils might be a bit stuffed too. I've heard of electrical components calling it quits after a little while. But checking the fuel is the easiest and cheapest thing to do first.

Yep, there was a bit of grit in 2 of the carbys, I guess there was enough of a blockage to reduce flow into the carbs when accelerating. I guess by leaving it for a few minutes the fuel flowed past the obstruction, allowing it to start then die shortly afterwards. The filters were clean and I cleaned out the jet a while ago, no idea how it got in there.

Thanks for all the responses, I'm amazed at how many people have responded in such a short period of time.

    Cheers
