The fzr250 was first manufactured around 1986/1987. There are really 2 models for these (described below):

2kr
1987-1988: Steel frame, single front disk, twin headlight, NO exup valve
1988-1989: Steel frame, single front disk, twin headlight, exup valve

3ln
1989-1991: Deltabox frame, dual front disk, twin headlight, exup valve
1991-1994: Deltabox frame, dual front disk, single headlight, exup valve

The dates are approximate. Because the fzr is an import almost everywhere date stampings etc. will vary. For example - tanyathecheeky saw a definite 2kr that was stamped as a 1991 model.

One must also be aware of manufacture date vs compliance date. Many people will try to sell the bike by compliance date (i.e. the date it was imported on) rather than the original manufacture date.

I'm famous

I know someone who has an 88 who sold it as an 90 model, even though he knew perfectly well what year it was ..
Buyer Beware - and check the plate!!

Yes you are - I was surprised when the bike was stamped as '91 and now it is a useless fact in my head! I initially thought it was compliance date, but then you did say it was actually the stamped date.

There is also a well-known melbourne based company that specialises in 250's that always sells fzr's by their compliance date. For example there is a 2kr listed identical to my old 1989 one "2005 complianced. 4 stroke. Finance/Insurance. Plus free bonus. 6 or 12 months warranty". No indication of actual manufacture date - easy way to get some unsuspecting buyers!

My 2KR is stamped '89 and was sold to me as a '96 which is the year it was imported/complianced. The '89 stamp was a bit harder to find than the import stamp.

Too bad I did not know about this website at the time.

Live and learn. As long as you are happy with the bike that is all that matters!

I have some info on different model identification and specs that can be found on this page

http://www.my-x15.net/FZR_INFO.html

Can't guarantee the accuracy though, but it might help.

Ill leave it up boz if he wants to modify/change the current info.

Interesting to see that the later 3ln model had 5 less hp than the earliest 2kr and weighed 6kg more, if these figures are right. Always had a hunch the 2kr was a superior machine

ps those paint schemes really started to get out of control by the end too!

Found a very good site in Japanese which I translated using Google's Language Tools. Just type the following link into the box and then choose translate from Japanese to English:

www.atelier-nii.com

He has a lot of stuff about FZR's

I checked out this website and just found out what an EXUP valve is! I recently bought my FZR250 (it's a 2kr), and I was looking at it thinking what the bloody hell is that supposed to do - well now I know. Problem is it is still pretty weak below 3000rpm even if it does have an exup valve!

Does anyone know where/how I can get a workshop manual for said beast and how much they cost?

Below 3000rpm is a place that the FZR250 does not like to be. It is normal to have no power below 3-4000rpm. Note that tacho on a 2KR does not even go that low.

There are electronic versions of the manual on this site (in japanese) There are no english versions that I know of.

The plate should be on the right hand side up by the head stem bearings (the bit where the steering meets the frame). It'll have the serial number of the frame, aswell as the manufacturers date stamp and a few other tidbits of info.

Congrats on the new bike.
