I quite often check my phone for Gumtree bargains and happened across a Honda CBR250RR in Toowoomba for $500, its listed as :

Honda Model: CBR250RR Displacement (cc): 250
Bike Type: Road Learner Approved: Yes
    Year: 1994
    KMs: 25000
Selling my half completed cbr250rr mechanically working and fine. Needs things to get it on the road or would suit parts as I've replaced all the mechanical problems. Needs fork seals, fairings I have the old ones just two are cracked), some bulbs and a clean up. Runs fine and moves fine she just doesn't look pretty right now. Text me for more details. Will add photos later today cheers

I called the seller, we worked out a deal and agreed to pick it up Friday night. I figured at best it was a parts bike and I would strip it for parts. Its a couple of hour drive to Toowoomba so Phil came along for the ride, we arrived around 7:30pm had a quick look at the bike which looked in pretty good nick, paid the seller and loaded it on the trailer. Its basically all there bar the rear seat, good deal. He said it was running but may have put some 2 stroke fuel in there by accident and now it didn't run.

I had another bike to look at in Toowoomba which was a 2005 CBR600F that the owner had responded to my gumtree wanted ad , he said he was transferring with the Army to Darwin and didn't want to take it with him, it was in awesome nick so I paid him as well, loaded it onto the trailer next to the 250 and we headed for home.

We tried Saturday morning to fire up the 250 and it wouldn't run, so today I managed to buy some new plugs, poured some fuel and away she went , awesome. Its actually in amazingly good nick for its age and it way to good to part out so this one is now my new project, I have a few ideas , all of which are costing me plenty of money which I don't have at the moment, so its a long termer at best.

Here are a few pics, everything works bar the thermo fan switch, slow and steady with this one as the bank balance is shot, I think the goal will be factory stock paint as its so original.

Good pick up, just the usual problems for an old bike.

Having heard the engine running once I replaced 4 plugs and added some fresh fuel was convinced this was a potential project bike. Did anyone notice that the engine casings were intact.....pretty rare these days!
Think this bike has great potential and Chris and I discussed various options....time will tell but feel certain this is a "keeper"

Honestly mate, these things are a blast and very very light... the ZXR's are heavier and the seat is further back on them, but that is my opinion. Plus the gear driven cams on the CBR sound amazing..

quick and the dead Pat, there is one in Quilpie for $800 if you fancy a road trip, even that's too far for me. Google says 12 hours one way

Anyway, back to the Cibby, a care package arrived today from Xcitebikes which includes fork oil and fork seals. I have also ordered some new dust seals and will rebuild the forks when they arrive. I had a hunt around the garage and found some heal guards that I never used so they will replace the broken ones on the bike. The rad has a dodgy temp sender, so I have ordered one of those off eBay. The petcock on the bike was shagged a nice new Chinese one was fitted that leaks really badly, so I am chasing a 2nd hand Honda petcock if anyone has one they are willing to part with, please PM me.

The PO has fitted a new chain but didn't replace the sprockets, adding them to the shopping list also.

    The Shopping List
    • Temp sender - Ordered on ebay $8
    • Fork Dust Seals - Ordered on ebay - $6
    • Fork oil and Seals - $35
    • Heal Guards - already here #freebie
    • LiteTek Seal kit
    • Air Filter
    • Brake pads front and rear
    • Throttle cables x2
    • Clutch cable
    • Petcock
    • Front sprocket
    • Rear sprocket
    • Dunlop GPR300 Tyres (Front and rear)
    • Single Seat cowl
    • Chinesium Fairing kit ( scheme yet to be decided, might get Bob to paint what fairings I have)
Im going to keep a running tab on the true cost to bring her back to life so others can see the perils of buying a project verses buying one that registered and on the road. I may do stuff that doesn't need doing like cables, brake pads etc, but I do it because then I know its been done properly and wont let me down once its on the road.

    Cost Summary:
    Bike $400
    Temp sender $8
    Fork Seals and oil $6
    Fork oil and Seals $35

    Total $449

:offtopic: I know, but she is not for sale. Remember when I said I would never sell this one?.. Am working on getting the funds together to bring her over... I don't care if its a high priced track bike, I love this bike that much; also this model is a rarity over here. Sorry mate...

You have a pristine OEM muffler there. I couldn't see any damage from the photo.

Recently, a friend had a small accident on his completely OEM MC22. Although insurance offered him $4,500 to write it off, he insisted in getting everything fixed. Honda put new fairings, new everything, but they couldn't put new OEM muffler, as they have been discontinued.

But I saw the quote Honda gave to his insurance company. If the muffler was in stock, it would cost $780!!!!

Some years back I had a CBR1100XX which was my pride and joy. Out of curiosity I enquired with the local Honda dealer what was the cost of replacing the OEM mufflers, after a quick check was informed the price was $1280.......EACH !!!! Shocked me.

well, I ordered my tyres, I have gone for Dunlop GPR300's as I have used them on ZXR's and have them on my CBR400, they have lots of grip well and wear well. $330 for a pair fitted seemed reasonable.
    gpr300.jpg

I also did a run down to see @paint-your-ride aka aceofsprays.com.au , he had a look at my panels thought minimal work was needed to save them, so they are most definitely getting painted.

bit of disassembly today, front end is now off, I was going to strip and paint the forks, but the factory paint still looks good so I will just rebuild them over the weekend. Swing arm looks nice and tidy too.

    Mirrors MR1001
    new Battery BTR01

    Levers, silver
MetalGear front brake pads - sintered 30-037-S
