Risky is on the money, head stem bearing could be dry, in other words needs grease or you may have some bearings missing or damaged, worth a check. Be careful when checking, don't loose any ball bearings as they are worth a Kings ransom in bike shops. I know because it happened to me on the X7 resto!! At the end of the day, you should have no resistance in either direction. Keep us posted.

at top of head stem should be 2 nuts, 1 locking and one to set pressure on bearings. good idea to have legs out and put big dish under headstock.loosen off first nut and slowly second nut holding headstem up. with both removed should be a cover over top bearings. slowly remove and count bearings and see if any spaces where bearings could be missing. remove bearings and SLOWLY lower head stem and check number of bearings there.if discrepency between the 2 then bearings are gone.get correct number of new bearings at bearing wholesaler plus some extra. i got 60 for my bike for $6 and only needed 44. clean headstem and put bearing grease where bearings sit and slowly fit around. slide headstem in and while being held up do the top the same.do down cover and tighten to a comfortableturning pressure. do up locknut and refit legs and wheel.slow and careful wins the day.

I use an old white sheet on the ground to catch any loose balls that try to escape.

i didnt have anything that i was confident to use to take the 'special' nut(not sure of name)off and be able to put it back on with correct torque so i left the bearings alone and will prob leave that for the professionals when i have the legs looked at. but thanks for the tips
however i took it for a ride today and i think with the tyre pressures and the aligning of the legs it seems to ride soooooo much better. BUT lol now the left fork has a leak. so i will take her to see a professional and have these issues looked at.
thankyou all very much for your feedback and great advice. i did copy and paste this thread onto another site and didnt get anywhere near the same quality of help as i have recieved here:drinks:

Sounds good Andrew ...... hopefully the forks arnt damaged and a bit of lube , new seals and oil, will do the trick :thumb_ups:
Might be worth having the front wheel checked and balanced also.
