Never used one. I just pick my time and places for speeding carefully.

I am assuming the detector you are looking at will be detachable? Having had my number plate stolen and another time a cheap ($2 shop) wrist watch stolen from my handlebars (using cable ties to tie it - I wanted a 'clock' on my bike) I would never trust leaving anything that is obviously an add-on to a bike or easily removed/broken off.

I'd be checking how legal that is first mate. If they're illegal, you'll be in a heap more trouble than a speeding fine..

hey dude!!
yeah like tanya said, do yuor homework first.I had been lookin at a few for a car im planning to get, the technology coppers use is getting better and better and they'll bust ya chops bad if they bust you with it (they have equipment for that). Apparently a lot of the radar detectors are not that really well made for austrlian conditions and the technology employed our coppers bless their blue n white hearts. I could'nt recommend the below sites highly enough, check em out, theres a heap of information but its pretty interesting.

http://www.australianradar.com.au/news.htm

these 2 sites have product reviews and specs etc.

A lot of that stuff is US though..Ive got a mate at work that can get them in..his got one on his car...and his had no problems at all. I guess as long as u are in a built up area with other cars..they aint gonna know who it is..thats if they can even check for radar dectors in the first place...

Greeny's prob the best person to add information to this topic. Do police have radar detection detectors :p. And how effective are they?

according to the first site which is the austrlian one, laser detector are the ones which are useless in Australia because the technology doesnt exist to detect the devices used by coppers, or something to that effect. Radar detectors arent a problem however. I suppose thats smething to do with radar spreading its signal out in waves whereas a laser is actually aimed straight at individual vehicles and by the time yur laser detector picks up the signal, your speed would already have been recorded. Thats my guess anyhoo

you're on the right track, a laser is aimed straight at you, and a radar checks multiple vehicles at a time before locking on to the fastest one.

and yes, the highway patrol do have radar detector detectors, and it is fairly easy to tell who has it, they always slow down the quickest and before everyone else!

not worth it i reckon, easier just to cruise along at 5-10kph over limit and then when you have the opportunity to speed choose to do so carefully.

Its weird in the UK n US its not illegal to have those. They have in UK this other thing which tells you where fixed speed cameras are through GPS, pretty snazzy eh

The $350 is cheap compared to vic for doing 38 over! I got a ticket 2 years ago for doing 64 in a 60 zone and it cost me $160 and 1 point - since then prices and points have gone up! But that is crap about the license lost. DId they send you the picture? At least you would have a momento!

Talk about fines, the other week. there was this section that has no right turn between peak hour zones.. i was going to go straight, but a car infront of me turned.. so i go **** that if he can do it ill do it.. next thing i know. coppers all over there.. thought it was like a $50 fine, turned out to be $160 or something.. then later on that day i got fine for parking longer then 2 hours... i checked my car to see if their were white lines and saw none.. but i found out later those inspectors are sneeky now.. the chalk inside the tyre.. wat a day that was. !

yeah you see em with this tool thats a long stick with chalk and a mirror on the end so they can see behind the tyre. i reckon we all go old skool and get white tyres on the car to **** up parking inspectiors.

alternative to camera detection

heres one for yas

our electrical tafe teacher was once tellin us he had this mate who had this suitcase ffull of large capacitors in his boot hookled up to his car. apparently the charge it was puttin through the car deflected the radar beams off at different angles so the cops couldnt register any speeds.
pretty good idea
however im not sure what size capacitors ya'd need and how ya'd hook em up.
could possibly find something about it on the net.
you can find anything you want on the net, ya just gotta know where to look.

but anyway with plastic fairings and all it might be useles

hahaha, not bad. well heres a story for ya. My ol man who came to oz in like 1955, he was doin electrical engineering at melb uni and came back to his pissy lil 1 bedroom sharehouse and found all his uni books and heater had been racked (he came from fiji so even in 20deg the heater came out), anyhow not havin much money he was pretty upset so using the TV he made(still got it in the shed, made from parts he taxed while working at RAF at point cook), he hooked up the main power to the keyhole of his bedroom. Not a bad idea until he shoccked the landlady who was the one moving his **** out when he went to uni during the day.dare say she fuckin deserved it!
