    Gday Lads,
Here is my current project, its a Fzr 250 3ln1. Ive owned it for the last 5 years. The missus was going to take up riding, but after going off the idea, ive decided to turn it into a trackhack. The poor little Fizzer only burst into life a week ago, after finally sussing out that the timing was all up the proverbial creek. A mate bet me a bottle of scotch that i wouldnt be riding it by chrissie, amazing what motivation can do...lol. The previous owner had it fully rebuilt by a yamaha dealership ( spent over $2500) on it. Ive cleaned out the carbs and set it to the stock settings, ( 2.5 turns out ). The fizzer cranks up like a beauty, but im not real happy with the levels of white smoke coming out of the exhaust. The oil did not have any water in it, it had 2.8lts in it though, which i reckon came from too high a float setting as it had hydraulic lock in cylinder 3 after leaving the fuel tap on over night. A new set of seals for the fuel tap is on the cards too. So has anyone got any suggestions about the white smoke levels?? There is no bubbling out of the radiator if the cap is off, but it is pulsating when revving, making me think the water pump is working. Anyway, enough talk, here's a couple of pics of it, and a video of the exhaust whilst running. Cheers for looking.

Video will be up when i can figure out how to drive it..lol. Cheers.

Change the oil and filters. I've been using Bel-Ray stuff but Delo 400 is quite good if you can get it. It's worth draining the coolant out of the rad and the block, and flushing the whole system with a hose for a good 5 minutes or so, and put new coolant in.

Yeh oil change and filter done tonight. Im thinking a good flush of the coolant will be in order. A bit perplexed on the white smoke though mate...

From the videos it's idling very high. It could be running lean.

I suggest you pull the carbs off and check the needle clip positions. Stock is #3 position (in the middle), pilot screws 2.5 turns out

Ok, yep that sounds like a good idea. My thinking was to run some cheapo oil for an hour or so, to give it a flush and then ill chuck in something half decent. Ill have to remember that brand...

It doesnt seem to be there at startup, after 20 seconds or so it starts and doesntly really stop. It seemed to be less once it was really hot though. How hard will stem seals be to change?? only ever done them on a ct110 before..lol.

They should look like this (the needles). You can see from the pic that the clip is on the third from the top. There are 5 positions. Topmost is leanest, bottom most is richest.

But as always best to start with stock settings and fine tune as needed.

U want smoke ? .... heres some FZR smoke !

If its sat for 5 years and had over half a litre too much oil in it ..... then take it out for a decent wallop and see how it is after.
Oil change is 2.2 ltrs with new filter.

Hahaha, yep alright so maybe im getting worried over nothing, thats very similar to what it is like though. Might chuck a plate on and go for a fang around the block, and see if that helps. Cheers for that.

Not saying it will solve the problem .... mine still smokes a little after its sat for a month or 2 but not when its running regularly and being ridden with gusto.
When these engines are 25+ years old they arnt going to be spot on unless some serious work has been done ... and done correctly.
$2500 for an engine rebuild? .... I could buy 3 more FZRs for that :D

Yeh i know, the bloke got royally ripped off IMO, especially since it didnt even run when he got it home. He gave me the receipts and everything with the sale of it. A spirited ride is definitely on the cards after i have rechecked the carbs again. It doesnt smell like burning coolant, so im hoping there is just a bit of condensation in it or something.

I wouldn't stress too much at this stage. Mine did the same, when I first ran it. I imagine it's been sitting a while and the valve stem seals have hardened. They'll loosen up with a little use.

The stock exhaust is incredibly restrictive too, does create a lot of condensation until the whole system is hot hot.

Also, how good is the position of the radiator filler cap, just in the right spot to cover your coils with piping hot coolant! :headbang:
