hey beano and welcome to the forums...

when i changed my oil filter i just loosened the exhaust and swivelled it... didnt have to toally remove it... it was a bit of a pain tho....

re what model bike you have.... does it have exup exhaust and/or deltabox frame? was it made in 93 or complianced in 93?

someone correct me if im wrong but i dont think 3ln's still had double headlights in 93.... so im thinking it might have been complianced in 93, not made in 93

cheers

simon

EDIT: changed my post after i realised it didnt really make sense... give me a break... it was late

yes you will have to remove the exhaust (at least in part - you can swivel it as said).

FZR250 models (to my knowledge)
... - 1988 - 1kr (I think). Twin headlights. Single front brake. No exup. Steel frame.
1988-1989 - 2kr. Twin headlights. Single front brake. Exup. Steel frame.
1989 - 1991 - 3ln - Twin headlights. Dual front brake. Exup. Deltabox frame.
1991 - 1994 - 3ln - Single headlight. Dual front brake. Exup. Deltabox frame.
1995 and beyond - not made. These will be re-badged older models... (often dealers will suggest that the compliance data is manufacture date)

(Underlined represents changes for that year)

i have the '92 3LN and i dont have to touch the exhaust. My oil filter is similar (though obviously smaller) then a car oil filter. It is mounted just behind the stand and takes about 5 mins to replace. I like it.
(sorry, just thought i'd brag!)

I wonder if only the 2kr models needed to have the exhaust moved?? All I know is that on my old 2kr the oil filter was strategically placed right above where the headers all merge, and it was impossible to get at without removing the exhaust. I think they did that so no one could steal the oil filter.

my 89 3ln is the same... maybe when they moved to single headlights, they woke up and realised that they should change the oil filter position...

off topic here, but it looks like this thread is reaching the end anyway...

Greeny: do you know how funny your sig looks? cause it's missing some punctuation , it's actually referring to riding people (not what you meant at all, I'm sure. you'd be on another completely different type of forum if you did!)

'let's ride people, anywhere, anytime, with anyone' should be 'let's ride, people. etc...'

(obviously I'm bored at work here at the moment!)

I've looked through the FZR400 manual and ive asked a couple of other bikers but none have really given me any firm answers as to which bit the bloody oil filter is in!

Can someone get out there with a digital camera and use their paint skills for good & not evil to identify on a 3LN-3 where the oil filter is!?! I THOUGHT i knew but apparently its not.

no camera but... If you look below your bike, in front of the exup valve about 10 cm. You will see a small 'dome' with 3 bolts on it. This is the oil filter. If you take some degreaser and wipe this down it will even say oil!!! If you have a 2kr this may be covered up by the exhaust.

I have a 3ln and the oil filter is behind the exup between the sump and the kickstand. Mine is a screw on one no bolts needed. It looks like a miniature one for a car and is black with white righting saying YAMAHA and the part number and some other stuff that I can’t recall just now.

looking from the front of the bike it goes headers, exup, sump then oil filter. Are you talking about a side view? my exup is in front of the engine block, then tapers to pipe under the sump. I will take a pic, just need to recharge my camera.

Not sure who's bike this is - found it on bike point and I annotated it:
here
OR
here

We are probably saying the same thing but just being confused by words. Hopefully a picture will help.

I wonder if there is a difference between 2kr and 3ln?

Yes. It seems that it is different. Yeah mine is a 3ln and the photos are of a 2kr. My headers are more rounded and the oil filter is in a different spot. I will take a pic tonight I have got my farings off atm.

Wow I taught boz something, even if it was by accident. It’s a bit dirty just fixed the petrol leak. Now I have the fun of cleaning it all up.

that is such an easier arrangement! The oil filter is readily accessible etc. The 2kr was very difficult to change the oil filter because you did have to move/take off the exhaust.

p.s. I have a lot to learn and am always willing to learn! And sometimes I do have incorrect knowledge (such as this case) and am happy to be set right.

So without being too freakin daft, can i have confirmation that the item circled in red (that looks alot like a car oil filter) is the oil filter on my 3LN-3.
I did attempt to remove it by hand with NO luck what so ever... so ill go fetch a removal tool and do it for the next oil change.

I was sold an oil filter that is the cartridge type (as in no casing); so im assuming thats bloody useless and ill need to get the part number off my one and buy another one (casing included).
