Seems a strange setup, when the bike is in neutral the oil light comes on when pressing the start button. PO says when bike not in neutral it comes on before pressing start.

Either way seems to turn over OK. Battery is cactus though so is on charge, can't see why it won't run so here's hoping with a bit of zing she'll fire up.

For people who have done rings before is it a struggle to get it going the first time? just curious because I'm not sure what is normal and what isn't. The bandit had new rings but due to valve issues we had to push start.

It shouldn't be an issue... if all the valve clearances are correct and you have fuel in bowls she should fire straight up.
Personally I would add a little oil to the bores before cranking it over... just to make sure there is lubrication there for initial start.. it has been a little while since you assembled it so a little extra oil won't go astray...

Hmm... interesting problem. It was cranking a little until the battery went flat. Now the battery is charged I press start it sparked at the positive terminal and blew the starter relay 30A fuse. Swapped in the FZR one and did the same thing but didn't blow the fuse. Weird because i didn't change anything.

So now I'm mega confused. The starter coil clicks when the button is pressed but sparks at the starter motor terminal. I hooked it up to my spare SM (FZR250 is the same) and it sparked at the mounting bolt.

There's no fuse box I can see on this bike and there's only 2 fuses, a 5A which is labelled "fuser" and the 30A on the starter circuit - neither of which are blown.

I did take the starter motor cover off and yes the engine still turns by hand however the rod that held the intermediate gear (between the starter motor and crank gear) was missing... it must have fell out and i didn't notice as the gear was still in place. Luckily none of the teeth are chewed but I suspect the initial problem may have been that gear jamming and the SM unable to turn... but when I fixed all that the bike doesn't even crank now the coil just clicks and that's it.

Confusing because it was cranking before all of this started and there's no other fuses I can see nor any melted wires/other problems - everything seems to operate as it should. Boy I love electrical troubleshooting... :headbang:

Will the starter motor spin if it is out of the engine when you hit the button?

Have you tried jumping the 2x big terminal's on the starter motor soleniod?
It may have been drawing a bit too much current through that ring terminal that broke off the end of the wire from the start switch and has arced across the contact's inside the solenoid, making it have a bad contact.
Otherwise have you checked the earth cable from battery to frame ?
Any discoloration of the wire's can indicate a bad/high resistance connection

@Andych No. I rested it against the engine (where the connecting bolts are) in case it needed an earth, and it just sparked where it touched (when the button was pressed). This is the FZR starter motor one I know works (it's the same as the FZ)

@my67xr Possibly but I hooked up my spare solenoid and either it is dead as well or that's not the issue. Same thing happens, first try it sparks, second and subsequent times it just clicks and does nothing else.

Ok, i thought you swapped in another starter motor ?
Put a jumper lead on the positive battery terminal and the other end of the jumper lead direct to the starter motor wire, bypass the solenoid (with the ignition on ) and see if it turn's over fast.

The sparking at the terminal on the starter solenoid sound's like a bad connection, or something inside the starter motor is touching the body/earthing out.
The FZR starter solenoid's are rubber mounted, maybe the solenoid cant be earthed ?

Those wire's near the head stem the blue and black female bullet's, does the FZ250 Fazer have parking light's ?

Just thinking too, have you checked that the solenoid is getting 12.6v + to the solenoid when you are cranking it ?
Can you try it with the FZR battery ?

Yeh it's got this really weird poppy sound doesn't it? I can't figure out why it's very strange. Have to see what it does with the exhaust back on because I don't think it sounded anything like that. I thrashed the hell out of it at high revs for a couple of minutes and I think I almost blew my ear drums lol

I need to look into the carbies though, the thing will go well for the most part but it doesn't idle steady. I wonder if a set of 2KR carbs will go straight on... otherwise I might struggle to rebuild these. I must remember to check up the manual to see if they're the same. Next stage is to put everything else back on and test ride, she's still registered until Feb 12 so luckily it's still totally legit!

And I imagine Kiff is responsible for the name change. That made me laugh... nice one hahaha
