Thought i would make a thread for this instead of hijacking other threads. Just finished checking all my valves and all exhaust valves are way out of spec, 3 valves had non existent clearance and all the others were well below spec, but all inlets are perfectly in the middle of the spec range.

what could be causing this as i have had exhaust shims changed before.

every 3000 odd k's give or take afew hundred, definitely going to replace them then check them again in 500 kays or so to see if there is a valve problem, just dont know what shims to use since i cant measure clearance, im guessing i just put in a shim that is .3mm less then recheck it and just replace it again if necessary.

Feeler gauge to check cost couple bucks any tool shop and 0-25mm micrometer to measure shims prob 50 odd bucks can use for other things like discs

    .3 is a lot mate

standard clearance should be 0.2-0.3 for exhaust valves, so will have to go 0.3mm less than what i have in there now then recheck and change again if need be. Just need to get a shim kit and torque wrench, local tool shop i use have some but there cheapest is 250 dollars, may aswell just send my bike to the mechanic for that dough.

Have some time off work and hopefully everything goes smooth so i can get this done before the weekend.

got the cams out and took out the buckets and discovered the person who done it before put the shims number side down just too make it that little bit harder, probably the same dude who put the jets in wrong.

hopefully get the cams on later so i can check the clearances again and do another shim run if needed, then fire it up tomorrow.

my 2c, make sure you put the right cam in the right place, they look similar, but they are different, its listed in the manual.

i actually left the intake cam in to hold the chain up as i had no shims to do on that side, got it all back together with the right shims and clearances are all good now.

for anyone who wants to do valve clearances with a timing chain, mark your chain and timing gear with a permanent marker too make getting it back together easier.

thanks phil, got it started and it started straight up and idled good,no choke needed. Engine sounds abit healthier and the exhaust note does aswell.

had to take .4mm off #4 cylinder, hopefully the valves are all good dont want to go down that route.

also to anyone who wants to do this follow this video, breaks it down and makes it very straightforward and is pretty much exactly what you have to do on the old 250's.

Just saw this thread as I think my bike may be due for valve clearances. Just a question though, last time I had my rocker cover off, the spark plug o rings were shot (still are) and they are leaking. I can't for the life of me find replacements even looking for balius o rings. Any one know of alternatives? Does anyone have accurate diameter so I can try and find similar ones off another bike? Mine are beyond recognisable!
