Hey Guy's
I have just recently bought myself a 92 FZR 250 and have been given abit of slack for it - mind you I am a Honda girl...Hmmmm CBR600RR. Anyway Iv'e been told that the FZR is not so easy to learn on and will be hard to get parts. I've replaced the clutch, brakes, air filter - (which was a shocker), the carb has been resealed and an new o-ring fitted. Since these replacements my FZR is a dream to ride. As I'm just starting out on the whole experience of bike riding I would appreciate any tips to put into practice as I ride, especially with cornering as this is what I love best. Anyone can ride fast in a straight line, cornering is the real challenge!!

welcome to the site! The fzr is no more difficult than any other sports 250 4-stroke (i.e. cbr or zx2r). It may be a bit more difficult to learn mechanically as there is little information on it (which is why this site exists). I would agree that it is more difficult to learn on than cb250, vtr's, etc though (easier than 250 2-strokes though).

Best advice from me is to make sure you practice braking and cornering regularly in a nice safe location (an empty parking lot is great for this), and while on the road be sure to ride within your limits. As people say - you can ride fast for a short time or ride normally for a long time.

As for cbr 600rr - to each their own. Personally, I prefer the more sports-touring style rather than pure sports (I consider the yzf750r sports touring - not quite as aggressive as modern sports). The current bike I pine for is the fz1...

I agree - twisty bits are where it is at!

I took my bike out for a ride for the first time a few days ago, mainly to see if it would seize up (I was testing if the oil light was broken.. The stupid way).

Cornering on the FZR thing took me by surprise. I'm used to waaay lighter bikes, so yeah big shocker there. Took the first corner too wide, and the second one too sharp, but I got it after about 8 corners.. Then I got a little paranoid about the uh.. Unroadworthy/unregistered/not wearing motorbike gear 'technicalities' and went home.

If you need parts, dont forget some can be supplied by Yamaha, while others can be easily, and sometimes cheaply imported. However if you did a clutch replacement I'd say you got yourself a pretty good dealer already XD.

Unlike Boz though, I looove the pure sports bike. I'm short, so on the FZR I'm in the kamakaze position the whole way, which is exactly how I like it. Just feels more comfortable for me, meaning yeah, a CBR 600/750 is probably my next bike. I have no bias for bike make..

Well.. I'd never get a harley.

ALSO: (I love coming back to posts with more stuff to say) If you just got the bike, a change of oil is in order. That is, unless the previous owner said they did it, and you know there's 2 litres in it (any more than that blows seals.. Not cool)

Welcome to the site and enjoy the bike.
Take it steady for a while and your confidence will grow with time.

Enjoy those corners.

I copped a bit of flack when I bought the FZR too. Don’t listen to them! The FZR in my opinion will teach you just as much it not more than any other 250 out there. Even if you feel like you have been thrown in the deep end a bit, stick with it and you will see the rewards.

I found that when it comes to riding it is all about confidence. If you don’t trust the bike or yourself to be able to handle it you won’t go very far at all. Just start out easy and take your time to get to know the bike well, practicing all the basics in a car park like Boz said is great. To practice your cornering you should try out raaqi's much loved figure eights and don’t forget to look where you want to be going, no point looking at the ground or the edge of the road.

Parts aren’t as big an issue as everyone makes it out to be, especially if you are in Australia or New Zealand.

As for the CBR600RR you can keep it, no going past that black 05 R6. Is it just me or is the 06 model really ugly, maybe I will get used to it. Boz I knew a guy that had the 04 FZ1 and loved it until he found the Tuono.

i like those, the z750 is a nice bike too. I've got to say all my attention is focused on what bikes i can (theoretically) afford at the moment though, and that takes me back about 10 years and 5 grand! my experience is that you can flick through magazines for months and rate bikes on their photos but you will only really know you like a bike for real when you see it for real! For me, Trx850s always looked dog ugly in mag photos, but every time i saw or heard one for real it made me think twice.

Hey thanks for the tips . Just so happens that a spacious carpark is not so far from where I live. Those figure 8's will be put into action Oil change was done along with everything else by my grumpy mechanic who see's my bike as a challenge...secretly I think he likes it though. Now it's just getting out there and riding...only its been pouring with rain lately....wet slippery road just isn't my cup of tea. But on the rides Iv'e done so far, my confidance is pretty much there simply because I feel comfortable on the FZR... each time I take a corner on her there's a big grin on my face! I reckon the FZR is the perfect bike to get me ready for the CBR600rr - although not so impressed with the colors (red & purple just dont go together) though the 06 seems interesting - different i think is the word. FZ1 aye Boz.....well as you say each to their own....I personally don't think that I would suit a naked bike. Pure sports suits my leathers He he he.

cornering is great fun but one of the things i found most difficult when learning was slow tight bends... something thats tested quite a lot in the P's course... so those figure 8's will be cruicial.... counterbalancing is king

I think the reason I love cornering so much is from being a pillion rider. I've got that down as a fine art I do enjoy it though even though I love riding myself, riding at the back of friends who have had years of riding experiance and can really go for it through corners gives me the feeling of what it would be like for me to get to that level.. it gives you a taste of what you can achieve by constant practice. New Zealand offers loads of twisty roads wherever you are, especially in the South Island. If you ever have the chance to ride that... I say take it. The roads are perfect there..... Twisty Heaven.... and the scenery will blow your mind.

WOW!! Now thats impressive! But no not quite like that, but the bike is leant right over in the corners though with both of us pretty close to the ground.....never scraped my knee though but I've scraped my boot...does that count Thats my ultimate goal......to get my knee down

Woah woah woah! Knee down? Got metal pads for that? As I'm sure you know that knees out isn't really a proper cornering practice - it's done in racing to stabilise the bike as they take corners sharper than the bike can handle..

So yeah. Make sure you don't take your kneecap off in what I'm sure would be a spectacular display of ripping flesh and ligaments.
But if you do it'd make a great story for the kids.

The FZR are perfect for learning on, the handlebar reach is further than most 250's make you more accustomed to a bigger bike.
I had mine for 6 months then i bought my 600, good choice of bike
